At what age should we start teaching kids to wipe their own bottom?

Don't laugh... I'm really wondering... Should I start teaching them now (they are 4 years old) or are they too little?

When I read this, I thought to myself, I am so glad I was not the only one. I had this same problem until my daughter started preschool. She was four when she started and I discussed with her preschool teacher that we had not ventured to this issue yet with her; I wanted to make sure her bottom was clean and I thought kids this age could not do this. Anyway, the preschool teacher began to tell me that they are old enough and peer pressure is a good thing in this area. So her first week of preschool I was very nervous to say the least. Within a week or two she was cleaning her own bottom, all by herself and doing an excellent job. So to answer your question, yes, they are old enough to know and proceed to clean thier own bottoms. Hope this helps.

As soon as they are old enough to start using the toilet on their own.

Four years old is a good age I taught my kids around this age. They are old enough to understand and have some control over what they do. Good hand washing is also essential.

Start teaching them when they are three. They will learn how and you can keep an eye on them for a while. My three were usually wiping themselves by the time they hit four and doing a good job.

At first I laughed about the question, but then I realised it is a problem to know when is the exact moment to teach it. I have two children and they learn alone. I remember they started going to the bahroom alone when they started kindergarten and it was at 3 years old. But I still believe any children have a different time to leanr it, it's a question of maturity. Try to teach it as soon as you can, but the children will learn it in the proper time.
