How long should a short story be?

    How long should a short story be?

    I am about to write a short story and share it with my Hubpages friends. Any other tips will be highly appreciated.

    Most published short stories are about 80 to 200 pages long.

    A short story is however long you want it to be. Wikipedia says they are generally between 1,000 and 9,000 words based on one definition.

    For hubpages though you might want to consider flash fiction, stories which are typically less than 1,000 words (also according to Wikipedia).

    Lewis Carroll said "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop." This is what should determine what format it is in, whether it be flash fiction, short story, novella, novel, or series. Short stories can easily turn into novels, and sometimes long stories need to be shorted to flash fiction.

    Depend on the publisher. I am in agreement with nochance. The shorter the story, the harder the punch (supposed to be). For HubPages definitely not more than 1500 words - and even this is too long. Nowadays people just don't have the time or motive/inspiration to read long stories or articles. KISS = Keep it short and simple. (But, of course, profound.)
