   Depending on where you live, a road trip to your nearest national landmark can be fun. I see you are in Chicago, so why not try going to Mt Rushmore or Niagra Falls. You could also try Canada, as visiting a new country is always exciting. If you want something cheap and laid back, take a cruise. If you do a little research, and time it right, you can find cruises to the Caribbean for less than $400 a person.

   Mexico must be considered for inexpensive, memorable holidays. The currency exchange rate is very, very favorable to US citizens. As a consequence, a trip to Mexico is always within your budget, and possible activities abound for enjoyable, fun-filled vacations. There are many great Hubs on vacation travel in Mexico.

   When our children were young and budgets were tight, one day road trips were always a good choice, and you really don't have to go far to find fascinating landmarks.  I've been to Chicago several times as a tourist and the surrounding area has some very interesting  things to do.
   
   I wrote a hub about making local vacations more interesting just by how the locals refer to landmarks.

   Visit the country-side, its the best! You get to visit old folks and relatives plus a lot room for relaxing greens, more airy atmosphere and lots and lots of old-fashioned baked goods. To me, it's the most beautiful, memorable yet inexpensive summer getaway. Lovely question.

   Buy a good family tent and you have your accomodation sorted out for many happy times with the family exploring National Parks etc and creating beautiful memories for years to come !Our girls still talk about trips we took them on.

   camping can definitely be memorable and inexpensive, but I think my daughter and her family have created a memorable one this week. They went to stay with her boyfriend's Mom with the three girls, 15, 7 and 2. They are 'camping out' in her living room and she lives only 10 minutes from the beach in Hampton, VA. They are all having a great time, enjoying each other's company and enjoying a visit with a family member they have not seen in a while. In addition, they plan to visit several low-cost sites while they are there, such as the local aquarium.

   University towns.  These are often small but jumping nuggets of art and culture and, in my experience, attract numbers of different, adventurous resturants and shops.  I lived in Lawrence, Kansas and there was much more of the above than in Wichita, the largest city.  There is usually a university town not too far down the road from about anywhere and you can enjoy the shopping and dining of a city in small town calm.
