    Islam inherently violent?

    I enjoy reading your Hubs. I am a Christian who recently heard a Christian leader state that he believes Islam to be inherently violent. I objected, but since I am not Muslim, I feel incompetent to respond effectively. Since you write so well and lovingly of Islam, would you be able to supply a response?

    You're asking this question of a specific hubber, but I thought I would throw in a recommendation for you. It's a documentary style television show called 30 days. There is an episode in the first season where a christian man goes to live with a muslim family for 30 days in an attempt to better understand each other. It's very well done and helps to dispel a lot of misconceptions about the muslim faith. Like, for example, Allah and God are the same deity. There is also a really powerful scene where an argument breaks out that gets really heated, but it is diffused by the daily call to prayer. Not only did the muslim prayer stop the aggression, it brought the two parties closer together afterwards.

    I know very little about Islam but I've heard it's supposed to be a very peaceful religion. Violence is frowned upon. Islam gets a bad name from it's extremists who have twisted the interpretation of the Islamic teachings. Just as Christians get a bad name from our extremists.

    I recommend researching Islamic beliefs from an unbiased standpoint such as books about world religions where all the facts are laid out.

    @WhoWas (A Response to his answer)
    Let me analyze the verses you quoted.
    (Quran 5:33) says "those who wage a war" NOT innocent people!
    (Quran 8:12) That is a description of hell, where people like Hitler will be and if you have a problem, with all that happening to Hitler then you are really cruel chap.
    (Quran 9:5) You quoted verse 5, but the next verse 6? Funny:-) Because 9:6 says that if the enemies want peace, then grant them peace and even take them the enemy to a place where the enemy would be secure. 9:5 is only talking about fighting in the Battlefield.
    (Quran 17:16) Talks about people, who wronged others and thus even themselves and every court of law is just and serves justice. So does the court of the Almighty God by serving justice to the those wronged and doing justice who wronged.
    Jihad only means "to Strive to Struggle". The word used for fighting in the Qur'an is "Qital" and Islam only allows fighting in self-defense and against tyranny and oppression. Islam condemns the killing of any innocent human being.  As the Qur'an says in Sura al Maidah Chapter 5 Verse 32, "if anybody kills any innocent human being, lest it be for murder or spreading corruption in the land, it is as though he killed the whole humanity and if anybody saves the life of any innocent human being it is as though he saved the whole humanity." Meaning that if anybody human beings kills any innocent human beings, it is as though the killed the whole humanity. So you can NOT blame Islam for what individual terrorist did on 9/11. As Islam condemns and being Muslims we condemn it.

    @Answer to the Original Question!
    Yes, Islam is violent against oppression, tyranny, injustice, falsehood and tumult, but Islam is tolerant and loving towards peace, justice, love and compassion.
