Has anyone had knee replacements done ?
If so was it just one or both ? How long did it take you to recover and was it a hard process etc ? I was told Friday that my knee has bad arthritus & when I cannot walk anymore then they will give me knee replacements which freaked me out a lot so interested in hearing other peoples stories.
I haven't but my father in law had both knees replaced a few months ago. He recovered much faster than the doctors expected and is now moving better than he has since I've known him. He was expected to be out of work for at least 6 weeks, possibly more due to his age (64), but he was back at work in three weeks.
Wow Good news about your Father in law ! I am too young at 47 and nervous about waiting till I cannot walk..
My husband had a partial knee replacement and he came thru the surgery fine and his recovery went pretty well. I have to say this darn thing catches on him now and them and he isn't that happy with it. May be the fact it was partial knee or the surgeon, who knows.
I need to have a hip replaced and I am putting it off as long as I can (I am the original medical procedure chicken). I'm walking with a cane now so one day I will have to give in and do it!!
I haven't but my father has. It improved his quality of life dramatically. You do hear of the odd person for whom it hasn't gone so well, but in general I think they are a huge success. This is especially true if you follow the exercises recommend during the rehabilitation period. I don't know exactly how long it took my father to fully recover but I do know that he was up and about quite quickly. He did as much exercise as he could and was safe for him and hasn't looked back.
I would imagine that if you have arthritis in your knee joint then you must be experiencing quite a lot of pain anyway.
I hope it all works out well for you.
I am in my late 20's and have been told the same thing. My mother in law had both knees done and it turned out horrible in one leg and great in the other. I think part of this was because she didn't follow the recovery rules. Don't worry about it too much!
I am concerned about the time I have to spend not being able to walk before getting it done - not the operation itself
I have seen people getting it done, in one knee or both knees together---and their life improves for the better, with all the arthritis pain gone. They are able to walk pain free. Though you have to follow the instructions of the doctor fully.
I have heard, they provide different set of replacements for different age groups. For young people, who have more physical activities to do, as compared to older people, there is a different set.
Your doctor is the best person to guide and I think you should go for it, if and when he advises.
Wish you all the best. Take care.
There is a procedure called knee resurfacing. I had it done by the third doctor after I was told I needed knee replacement by two doctors I went home the same day as the surgery. There was no rehab. Works great if you qualify for it.
Hi there,
Two friends of mine - also young like you - have had the procedure done in the last couple of years. One decided (against his doctor's wishes) to "take it easy", put his leg up and not move around too much. The other wisely decided to take his doctor's advice and got moving as soon as possible and walked and exercised. Needless to say, the second one healed faster than expected (a few weeks) and had less pain and a better outcome.
