Why are gun sales soaring?
Retail summaries published today indicate that sales of guns and ammunition by licensed dealers have skyrocketed since the election, running about twice their pace of a year ago. Why do you think that is happening?
About the nicest answer I can give is because people are stupid and easily manipulated. It's the same basic reason hundreds of people sold everything they owned to follow some nut-job around because he said the world was going to end, just on a much larger scale.
All those little people out there clinging to guns and religion?
Not that, all the little people clinging to the fear of losing guns and religion.
Really, Sapper? So I must one of those stupid and easily manipulated people since I refuse to register the guns I own and believe that the second amendment was actually penned to protect me from an over-reaching government. You need to wake up.
same reason why people are flocking to Bugarach France to try to escape 2012. Soft easily manipulated minds.
No chance the buyers are motivated by their own views rather than the machinations of dark schemers behind the scene?
How is it that arming oneself is the best defense against being attacked but such a stance is reserved for the morally just. IE; Iran and nuclear weapons. How are personal views detached from doomsday preachers and their expertise at fear mongering.
I guess the difference is most gun owners aren't preaching the direct annihilation of a race of people like the Iranian gov't has been doing. Rather they just don't trust how society will handle themselves in a crisis.
The Soviets and the Chinese once threatened human extinction if provoked but years of non conflict cooled their temperament. The reasons for continuous conflict in troubled regions is because of military imbalance.
the soviets and Chinese were following a bad political system but were relatively sane... Iran is stuck in the 12th century and really doesn't give a flip about such things as sanity or if civilization carries on the next 12 months.
Precisely, the docterine of mutually assured destruction only works when neither side wants to be a martyr.
I am not a Muslim or agree with insane religious practices such as religious martyrdom but without mutual respect there will be perpetual conflict. Business strategy as gun sales soar? Russians sell weapons to Arabs, USA sells weapons to Israel.
I believe the question only pertained to domestic sales. Not miltary sales. But maybe I am wrong.
The question did indeed refer to purchases by American citizens. I am puzzled over this line of reasoning. I have to admit the equation of that with international arms sales to belligerent nation-states escapes me.
As a gun owner, I think there are serious concerns about new legislation that may be proposed to ban some or many firearms. However, the votes in congress don't exist. So its probably an unrealistic concern in the short term. The real concern is the proposed restrictions on ammunition. Clearly a firearm is useless without a projectile. Yet I have a different take. I think the hurricane here in my home town contributed to firearm sales. It was just another example of how people behave like animals after a few days without power and gasoline. Looting, rape, violence etc. It was just another reminder of what happened during Katrina. Folks all over Staten Island had to arm themselves with anything they could. And since NY is so tough on gun laws, only the bad guys who break the law had them. Since natural disasters don't discriminate, people are foolish not to protect themselves.
Let's face it...If people behave like this for a sale...

What will they do if there is a larger scale natural disaster.
I am not sure, but it seems all those who are waiting for the country or world to end, want to make sure if they survive they can protect themselves from their neighbors. Bible in one hand and a gun in another, this country can be a scary place if you dwell on the weirdness of this thinking. I am wondering just how much Hollywood has influenced it?
People with a bible in one hand and a gun in the other are the very ones who founded and built this country into a shining beacon on a hill for the world to emulate. I'll take that any day over a country that doesn't trust its own people with guns.
Silvie, are you getting more cynical with age? Not every gun owner is a "Bible thumper." Here in Montana with the grizzly bears it is a necessity if you want to be outdoors.
No Pat not more cynical but pretty sickened by how violent this country has become and the guns mentality not just the guns are a big factor.
Less than one half of one percent of all the guns in the country are used to hurt an innocent. If you want to look at why the country has become more violent look to Hollywood, the drug culture and the lack of fathers in the urban family
My guns are no threat to anyone, frankly. Unless, that is, you intend to come and try to take them from me. Then, all bets are off. And, just to make one additional point - I'm not a "bible thumper", as you condescendingly call them.
There is no doubt that Obama is clearly and passionately anti-firearm. The fact that he has been restrained from acting as much as he desired the past few years doesn't change that. However, the power of the presidency doesn't necessary need Congress behind it to make many detrimental changes to society. His executive orders, the orders and regulations of his various agencies such as the Dept. of Justice and the BATF, and his appointed judges can all do great harm to the right to keep and bear arms. To deny this is to live in a fantasy land. With him no longer facing another election there is simply nothing restraining him anymore from using this power in an effort to advance gun control.
When you see thunderclouds in the sky it is not a remarkable prediction to forecast rain is coming. It is not a remarkable prediction to forecast a much harder time for gun owners coming down the road.
People are scared that Obama is going to pass anti-gun legislation. Gun shops must love Obama- business is booming.

Our Nation was founded on the principles and beliefs of the Bible. That's right, the King James Bible. At what point did we get lost? How could our nation go from all Christian to seemingly divided in half in a mere 235 years? If we look back at all the presidents, there has only been one who did...

In short the answer is no. Liberals say that less guns out in the people's hands the safer everyone will be, but the truth is the only people that will be safer are the criminals. There is a reason most mass shootings occurred in gun free zones, the perpetrator wants to do the most...

However, those who have firearms...

Now that the left is beginning to realize the mantra of 'conservative vitriol' isn't working regarding the tragic events in Arizona 60% plus don't believe the template set forth by the media), they've gone to page two; tougher gun laws. I've been in law enforcement for 25 years and the very...

Would you keep a gun in your household for self defense or is this a bad idea?Would you keep a gun in your household for self defense, or do you think this is where parts of the world are going wrong and make a snowballing type problem?

Why is it easier to get away with murdering someone than possessing a gun for self-defense?Killers average about 10 years in prison...whereas someone possessing a firearm that hasn't been used gets 25. What is wrong with out justice system?!
