Why is it USA's job to police the world?

It seems our government thinks it is their job to police the world. Why is this?

The world is controlled by an international banking cartel and the US Military is its enforcer.

It's not.  We have a vested interest in protecting certain parts of the world where we have vital allies such as trading partners.  But we most certainly over extend ourselves into arenas that we so absolutely no benefit.  While I'd love to see an end to tyrannical dictatorships around the world.  It's not our job to remove them all.  Plus it is simply not economically viable.   Afghanistan is a good example.  At some point the mission there went from tracking down terrorist, which really was a job best suited for special forces, to having our military build schools and roads.  All of this supposed good will we have been hoping to see in return for building a new school for some young Afghan girl to finally attend seems like a delusional dream.

It's not our job. Something about American pride probably has something to do with it. England used to have that pride too. But with the North Korea thing, we kind of got pulled into that...

It is my opinion that we should only intervene when another country, like North Korea, poses an imminent threat against the United States or its allies. Our current administration, along with a bought and paid for congress, has a Socialist Agenda that is taking our country in an undesirable direction.  Blame apathy for the horrible situations we face today.

“The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush.  It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment. “~Robert M. Hutchins, Great Books, 1954

“Information is the currency of democracy.”  ~Thomas Jefferson

Thats not it- we are a money based government. USA officials aren't "policing the world" per se. The real power here is corporate greed. No war or foreign conflict instigated by the USA has ever been perpetrated for any reason other than capital gain. Our government wants us to make and spend money above all else. They need citizens to feel "safe" so that they will continue to buy things. Most of the mass-media that we are subjected to is clearly meant to distract and jade us into believing that we are free. Free to buy what they sell.

It's a combination of three reasons. One reason is there are certain US-based companies that want resources, land, and cheap labor that exists in 3rd world countries. The US props up a dictator in these 3rd world countries using "foreign aid" money. When the people of these countries rise up in rebellion, the US sends in troops to "police" and help quell the uprising. The second reason is that our government is afraid of losing its place as the world's most powerful country and this requires more than 700 military bases in various foreign countries. The third reason is the Pentagon and military industry, which both need an excuse to have high budgets. From 1945 to 1991, the excuse was the threat of the Soviet Union. From 1991 to 2001, the excuse was that someone was needed to police the world. From 2001 to today, the excuse has been terrorism.

US Military spending as a share of the US GDP is a fraction of what it was decades ago.  While I agree the US is over extended around the world, military spending as wasteful as it can be...is nowhere near where it was during the 50's and 60's.

It's not our job. However more often than not it's a responsibility we (choose) to embrace as being (the leader) of the "free world". I also think we learned a valuable lesson when we took an isolationist stand while Hitler was taking over Europe.
Having said that America generally will only get involved when there is a "threat" to our "interests". (oil or a strategic location to fend off potential enemies are usually the determining factors).
Presently there are tons of "conflicts" America is NOT involved in. Africa, Rwanda, Sudan,  Burma, and other parts of Asia

It's not, and aside from protecting ourselves from clear and present threats, I think we should stop meddling in the business of sovereign nations. We cannot gain freedom for others or else they will not come to appreciate it. They must rise up and throw off the yoke of tyranny themselves, or else they will simply replace it for another since they do not appreciate the sacrifice to destroy the first.

All very interesting answers, but the truth is a bit more simple than what is being explained.  It is not the job of the USA to be the police of the world.  It never has been.  However, It happened after World War Two.  It was not by choice or want but was thrust upon America.  Remember, prior to World War Two, America was a isolationist nation.  Stability in the world was destroyed after the war.  Now it was propped up by two Nations; The Soviet Union and the United States.  Even during the 40 plus years of the cold war, there was stability or as much as can be achieved in the world, but then the Soviet Union imploded.  It imploded because it economically and financially in ruin.  This eventually happens to all totalitarian state regardless of the "Marque" they go by such as; Communism, Socialism, or Fascism.  We know this because history teaches us this.  Have you ever heard of the former Soviet Union. With the fall of the Soviet Union, there remained one super power that retained its economic and financial strength.

In short it was thrust upon us.  Ask yourself these questions:   What would happen to the world if the United States was removed from it?  Would there be more or less chaos?

It is nothing to be ashamed of to be the Worlds Greatest Power.  History teaches us that and so think of the Roman Empire.  In the Roman world, Rome created stability and when Rome fell, the world was torn apart and hence the Dark Ages was created.

As in Roman times,  the world are teetering on the strength of America.  As America becomes weaker, its influence begins to diminish and so  the stability of the world will become more erratic.  You can see it happening now.  As America's economy and finances weaken, it is creating uncertainty in the world.  I will conclude with this question.  What happens when uncertainty rises?
