   Sweet Jesus, what a question.  My answer is based on my personality and nothing more...I would get as much gas money as I could and I'd move the hell out of that area to a place where there is some help to be found...but with kids my answer makes no sense.   Contact churches? There must be churches that have programs to help needy families.

   Sleep at City Hall (if there is such a thing). Every community should have "safety-nets" for such circumstances and if they are not in place, in my opinion the time to get on it is now.
   Other than that, one can try contacting non-profit organizations, if not in that area, the closest ones nearby.
   Good luck to anyone in this situation!

   See if there are any Brethren or Community churches in your area. I believe these types of churches often have better programs in place to help the needy than others such as Baptist...also, have you no friends in the area?

   peeples.....if not shelters, there is always something to do, somewhere to go for help....always.  Off hand, the Red Cross comes to mind.....Crisis Centers, churches ( as bill suggests).....Keep in mind, the immediate thing is to "reach out."   One call leads to another and another.  Whoever you speak to about this dilemma, will surely lend a hand of assistance,  by spreading your plea for such basic needs.   I even suggest the Police Dept.  Law enforcement most always knows what's available to help people and where it's located.

   I  hope that your being just hypothetical and not real and personal. I was recently homeless for just short of 5 years. For three months now I have been renting an apartment with Public Housing, and it is not nearly as bad as you might think, not a bad deal at all, by any stretch of the imagination. It took me a long time to get on and I was very lucky. Being homeless as a single man who happens to be a radical outdoorsman survivor type, is one thing, raising a family in the streets is entirely something differant. I saw it happen. We had homeless families here in Nashville. I take great comfort knowing where I can get a free meal any day of the week and I am planning to start volunteering at several of these places, just to put back into my world. We have tons of resources here. Consider Nashville. It is not easy here by a long shot. This is the heart of the Bible Belt, all the good, bad, and ugly, but you will not starve here, and you can find free clothes here too. You can possibly get on as a bus driver with the schools here. There are jobs out there, for some people, idk your stats. I wish you well, good luck, and you will be fine, hang in there, it takes time, you will be fine.

   I thought about his question when I had to work in Columbus, GA for a month. I saw more homeless people in one day there than I did living 3 years in NYC. I see them in the city and I wonder "Why not go to the woods?" If they were lucky and had access to a $50 tent and some other minor gear they could survive better than behind a dumpster or under a bridge. It is for this reason that I believe all children should be taken camping and taught how to survive. But that is just me.
