What would you do if your special needs daughter was tied up by her Teacher to a chair?
My eight year old daughter was tied to a chair with a jump rope. I was told by the bus driver to pop up at the school. I did and found the Teacher untying my daughter from an adult chair with her arms plus her feet bounded. I had to control myself because I felt rage rising up in me. So I went to complain to the principle and was told she was in a meeting so I left a message but she never called me back. I'm still lost for words. My daughter is legally blind and has CP. No one deserve to be treated like an animal, so now I am fighting for Teacher to be removed from all special needs children.
File complaints with every level of the school system and the police and possibly consider criminal action. Unless the child was in danger of hurting themselves or other people, restrains do not belong in the school. If a teacher is seeing potentially dangerous behavior, he or she should report to the principal and the parents should be contacted and advised of the situation. School personnel should offer reasonable alternatives and behavior specialists should become involved in the process.
Getting the teacher removed is certainly an expected response, but the more important issue is does the system allow for such restraints. If it does, then that is your bigger problem. The teacher should be reprimanded if he or she is young, acting on the advice of an older teacher or a supervisor or principal. Special needs children have problems they cannot control. CP is one of those that the child has no control over. There are alternatives. Your first step is to find those alternatives and then worry about having the teacher removed, suspended or counseled depending on what led her to act in such a manner. Take care of your child first, then worry about the school and the bureaucracy.
Thanks Larry for your comment! I tried to file a complaint with the police department and was told that my daughter didn't have visble scares so they couldn't go through with the charges.
Unfortunately, some physical evidence like that does disappear. If you have any witnesses you can try again. You can still pursue the complaint through the school system and as a parent, you always have the right to pop up in class to observe..
How upsetting and I think you showed great restraint by not punching the teacher right in the nose. If I were you, I would plop myself in the principal's office until he or she meets with you. I would also contact the board of education and demand a meeting. Be vocal, be passionately appalled and do not let them side track you. Be demanding and you will be heard.
