What is dark comedy?
what is dark comedy? how to write dark comedy?
Jokes exchanged at night without lights on. No. You can't write dark comedy. Once you switch on the light for writing, the dark comedy vanishes.
(I know there are some quite serious people here who will comment serious things to this reply!)
Now coming 'seriously' to dark comedy, example:
3 men come and ring the bell of Smith's house. Mrs smith opens. "Excuse me, ma'am, are you the widow of Mr Smith?"
"Not widow. I am Mrs Smith"
"Well, ma'am, we've brought the dead body of Mr Smith".
Dark comedy usually deals with heavier subjects than regular comedy. Death, violence and sex are represented with little concern about who it might offend. Though, it's different from raunchy or dirty comedy in the sense that it has no interest in giving you a happy ending or likable characters. (This is in reference to dark comedy movies, but a similar description applies to other forms of media.)
A dark comedy usually involves making people laugh about things normally not designed or thought to be funny. An example might be a killer that makes funny remarks after brutally killing people.
Another example is the movie "War of the Roses" about a couple going through a bitter divorce while living in the same house and physically out to hurt one another. "Bad Santa" is another dark comedy. An alcoholic Santa who cases malls to rob them.
You have to draw the reader or viewer "into that world" where they suspend their own moral compass and become willing to follow the moral code of the characters involved in your story. This allows them to find humor in things they'd ordinarily would not consider to be humorous topics. The more over the top it is the better.

Wiki's blurb:"It was a dark and stormy night" is an often-mocked and parodied phrase[1] written by English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton in the opening sentence of his 1830 novel Paul Clifford.[2] The phrase is considered to represent "the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic...
