What is your favorite movie that didn't get the media or critical attention you think it deserved?
What is your favorite movie that either didn't get the media attention or didn't receive the critical acclaim you think it deserved? Two movies come to mind for me: "Snow Falling on Cedars," a film adaption of the novel, starring Ethan Hawke. I thought this movie would sweep the Oscars when it came out, but it was only in the theaters for about a week and then disappeared. And also "Betsy's Wedding", a comedy starring Alan Alda and Molly Ringwald. I never remember this movie being in the theaters, but it pops up on cable tv quite regularly. What are your favorites or recommendations?
That is a great question, yet my mind is drawing a total blank. The only movie I can think of is a horror/thriller from the early 2000s. It was called "Below" and it was about a pseudo-haunting on a submarine in the middle of nowhere. I remember being surprised by how well done it was, despite never having heard of it.
I can't say I've heard of it either. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for your answer!
I consider "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter" an underrated movie. It is an important movie because it does something action-horror films do not usually do. Usually such movies decide that the supernatural horror is the thing to devote human energies to overthrowing; it is sometimes implied that the supernatural horror caused major human problems.
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter does not follow that formula. The movie actually decided that it was more important to destroy slavery than all vampires. Not only that, but the movie decided that it had been the injustice of slavery which had given the vampires organizational cover, which had made the bloodsuckers more dangerous.
Also, there was a 1993 film starring Laurene Fishburne and Ellen Barkin called "Bad Company." This is a film noir masquerading as a "spy thriller." Fishburne and Barkin's chemistry was amazing. On screen together they were HOT! HOT! HOT! Another underrated gem.
I think the Jim Jarmush film "Only Lovers Left Alive" was underrated; but then again, I suppose Indie fare is, by definition, often underrated. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, you have never seen vampires like this.
Also, I really enjoyed an animated, highly philosophical film by Richard Linklater called "Waking Life."
I've heard of the Abe Lincoln film, but haven't seen it. I think I have seen "Bad Company" on cable. I'll have to look for it again. My husband and I saw "Boyhood" by Rich Linklater and really liked it. We'll have to see "Waking Life" too. Thanks

My candidate-production for this criteria is the Imitation Game with the guy who plays Sherlock Holmes in a recent BBC production, Benedict Cumberbatch...
Yes, Cumberbatch is good in everything he's in. I liked the "Imitation Game" and look forward to seeing Benedict in more and different roles. If you haven't seen it, you might like "The Theory of Everything" with Eddie Redmayne. Thanks!!
My all time favorite is a lesser known book-based flick "84 Charing Cross Road" starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft. I think it is a stunning movie with some stellar performances. This movie deserves to be seen - by one and all.
Sounds interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!
Glad you found it interesting Donna. Hope you like the movie!
