Can my dog be unhappy if I will get a puppy?
I have a 1.5 years old male dog, He is with me at his age of 3 months. I was thinking to bring another puppy but some one told me, If I will will bring another puppy then my first dog wont like and can feel unhappy or depressed, is that true?
Most dogs do better, not worse when bringing in another dog. They usually take a few weeks to get use to the new family member, but after they usually become quite close.
Think about it this way, the puppy will grow up with that dog as it's sibling. Someone to get in trouble with, learn from, sleep with, play with, and eat with. This is usually a good thing. As long as you continue to show your first dog that it will not lose love then all should be fine.
Yes, it is good to get dogs away from that single dog syndrome, and allow them to have another member of their pack. I always recommend that an owner take the older dog with him when getting a new dog or puppy though. Sometimes dogs just do not "click", and if they do not get along the older dog will be unhappy, no matter how much love you show him.
Be careful. (At the moment I have an older Pit Bull who has been with me since she was weaned. My Pit Bull does not normally like other dogs but when she was about 2 we were visiting a Schnauzer breeder and she liked one of the puppies. I brought her home and they have done well together ever since.)
Hello Dr.Mark,
Thanks for your suggestion.
But as an expert, can you please let me know - " - In this situation do you recommend, To bring an old dog rather bringing a puppy. or First train old dog to get along with other dogs then bring a puppy?
I do not think you can train any dog to get along with all dogs, since dogs are like people;some just dont get along. It is better to take the older dog to meet the puppy, and if they dont get on do not even bring the pup home.Good luck w pack

My dog follows me everywhere, is that ok?I have two small dogs. Chihuahua mixes one is 4 years old and the other is a year old. And the four-year-old one, well he pretty much runs the house and he's the boss and then the little one follows me everywhere and anytime he's barking or being naughty the...

I'm in the process of training my four-month-old puppy. He is quite unruly and hyperactive, especially when I take him out on walks. I've watched and read numerous videos and books, and a lot of them suggest the use of choke chains or pinch chains. I find it a tad cruel, though. Is using choke...

How do you housebreak an older dog?I adopted a stray from a shelter. She's about a year old. I take her out regularly to pee and poop. I give her treats and praise her when she pees and poops, which is regular on our walks. In the yard, she will usually pee after a bit, but she gets away to poop in...

I am asking this question because I am annoyed with people bringing their dogs everywhere. There is an ethnic food fair with crowds of people, hardly any room to walk, people bring their dogs, too. I am entering a restaurant and, of course, there is a dog under a table, too. A store, another dog....

Do dogs possess rights? Should we protect puppies, as we protect human children, but then recognize independence when they become adults? Or should they always be considered personal property, to do with as we wish?
