   You can be any race you want to be. My father was part Indian. My mother was white. My grandfather was German. My grandmother was Dutch, so I'm a mixture of white and red skin.

   Clive....You don't mention your bio Dad?  Your maternal or paternal grandfather was white?  If BOTH of your parents are black.....you would probably identify as black with white ancestry..  I'm not 100% sure.  Obama is 50% black & 50% white.  Not for one moment has he ever referred to himself as white or even mulatto.....ever wonder why?  Maybe because physically he appears to be black?  Or does he "prefer" to be black?  There must be something somewhere that explains in detail and with specifics how this works.  Till you figure it out....You're Clive, a person, a man, an American...with a cute smile..that works, right?

      well, my maternal grandpa is white. my dad is also black. but some of my family are all mixed race like a a damn fruit salad. Indian, white, black, maybe even asian

   I would say mixed race but you can identify however you want.  I'd say that likely depends on which parts of your heritage you're familiar with and how much you know about your ancestors.
   
   I don't know my biological father or anything about his family, but my mom's side goes back to Ireland and Scotland, so I've always said I'm Irish/Scottish.
   
   However, I recently did a DNA test which had me at about 15% Turkish, 5% East Asian, and 5% North African... meaning 1/4 of my ethnicity is not as 'white' or European as I thought it was!
   
   But I'd be very hesitant to identify as any of those things because I know nothing about where it came from.  I've had family members on my maternal side going back to Ireland regularly to see where our ancestors came from so for me it's very simple to identify as Irish, whereas I went 28 years not having any idea I had any Turkish background whatsoever, so it would be hard for me to identify as Turkish at this point (though if I knew who my father was I would be totally willing to explore it!).
   
   So, anyway, I think while your ethnic background is scientific information based on DNA, what you actually identify as depends on situational/environmental factors on top of that.

   I have it great. I am adopted in a closed adoption. So I can pick what I want. You however must fall into the one drop rule. I thought that term was derogatory until someone explained it was a point of pride now. How come Obama is considered black? It seems strange to me.

   I don't know what the answer is to that. I suppose mixed race or 50% white & 50% black. My grandfather was German and my Grandmother Portuguese.
   Can't speak either language. I speak Afrikaans and English. So what am I? German/Portuguese/Afrikaans or English? My husband was German, so what are my kids?
