I have mixed feelings around Christmas. On one hand I feel it has been reduced to a consumer experience where it is time for retailers to suck that little bit out of the average working family. On a more positive side, it is great to see my kids enjoying and having fun, opening presents, getting high on lollies and just being kids. At work it is great because it is quicker getting to and from work and there is less to do.
Personally I will spend my time shared between my kids, my friends, my work, and alone. I am sure at times it will be depressing but that will be off set with the good times as well.
The meaning of Christmas may have changed over the generations, but everything does, is it not time to update our meaning of Christmas?
To me Christmas is a holiday that does not find its origins in Christianity. It is a time that people purchase gifts and extol virtuous qualities that will be extinguished at the end of the Holiday season. It is the cause for increase debt and unhappiness since giving is emphasized. The rest of the year things go on as usual, but during the Christmas season suddenly Jesus Christ is remembered. Is he remembered as the man who cured the sick, healed the lame, and gave sight to the blind? Is he remembered for returning the life to Lazarus, or the Widow's Son? Is he remembered for giving his life in behalf of all mankind? No. He is remembered as a helpless baby laying in a manger who has 3 Wise men visit him bearing gifts. There are so many things wrong with the Christmas story, that it invalidates the reason so many religious people claim to observe this holiday. Jesus said that there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. But Jesus was not referring to material things. He was making reference to our showing love. Demonstrating that love by actions. Actions that will not put us at a financial disadvantage.
My family get together at Christmas. We do share more than store bought gifts.
In my country swimming, fishing, the barbeque where you have meals with friends and neighbours, plus going around the streets looking at the way people have decorated their homes is all part of Christmas. And I do like to remind my nieces and nephew wherever they are in the world that they still have an uncle who cares about who they are and what they do.
I also like seeing Santa Claus in the malls and the smiles on young kids faces when they talk about their break from school and what they are going to do on the holiday.
Yes, Santa Claus isn't 100 per cent Christian the way he is today and it was a Roman emperor who decided that Jesus should be born on what we now call Christmas Day...Even so I LOVE Christmas and would not be willing to give it up for anyone!
Christmas is more about the 'feeling' than anything else. Presents are nice for the children, but the spirit of giving is the important focus. Hopefully this bad economy brings the original intent of Family Gathering to the center stage.
Christmas is for kids.
It is a convenient time of year to get together with family because school and work shut down for everybody at the same time.
That's about it.

Has Christmas became all about presents and Santa Claus instead of Jesus to children today? How can we as Christians make sure they know the real meaning of Christmas?

I was wondering wether or not I could afford a Christmas this year. I was thinking how much better off we could all be if we really bit the bullet and didn't have the usual end of the year splash out. I would rather have save it and start 2012 off witha bit of breathing space. I estimate...

What does Christmas really mean to you?Though there is a generic answer to this question and many of are guilty of giving this answer. I am truly interested in finding out what is the true meaning of Christmas to you. Christmas means to me a time to find my spiritual center and a time to fellowship...

Does anyone know any person; a friend, neighbor, sibling, acquaintance, work mate e.t.c who is not a Christian? In the light of the Christmas mood and spirit, what gift do you think is best to share with such a person?
