Ethical Problem With Some Of The AdSense Ads

   Hi fellow hubbers,
   
   I recently wrote a hub on plastic pollution, and below a tragic picture of a plastic-polluted beach, there are small ads for plastic products.
   
   I find this insensitive to the theme of the hub and parasitic on the cause IN A BAD WAY.
   
   I assume that I have absolutely NO control over this, right?

      I'm no expert on the technical aspect of your post, but on one of my hubs I found some of the 'related hubs' to be objectionable.  They were, in fact, contrary to my hub's message.

      I think you can go to your Google adsense and check the button that lets you review ads before being posted and exclude ads you don't want.  You can also do this to block certain categories of ads.  I'm not sure if this will work within hubpages, but I've done it for my blogs elsewhere.

   AFAIK the only way round your problem would be to disable ads by making your hub "non-commercial" (go into edit mode and deselect the "this hub may be considered commercial" tick box).  Adsense lets you block specific URLs from all your hubs (e.g. I've blocked scientology.org from mine), but doesn't let you filter out particular types of ad.
   
   I'm in a similar situation with one of my hubs and if I'm wrong in what I've said above, then I would love to hear about it!

   I live within 2 minutes walk of our local beach and it becomes more like a rubbish dump with every passing day, not good.
   
   You can block individual ads by URL within your Adsense dashboard, but chances are they'll just be replaced by even more ads for plastic crap, and lower paying ones at that.
   
   The only real option would probably be to remove all ads from that hub (I believe this is possible in the edit options of the hub - set ad level: high, medium, low, none) but of course you won't be making any Adsense money from it. 
   
   But you could always display Amazon products, etc.

            HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! YOU!? Risque? Nonsense...
            I just quit adsense, as before I only made 20 cents anyway.  I rely on my good looks to get me everything I wnat.

                  Strewth.... I must be doing something right! in my second month I made just under $15 from Adsense... and I know doohickey about keywords and stuff!
                  
                  If you don't like any advert, just tell us on the forums to visit your page and hit the add as many times as possible, that way the ad will cost the advertisers a small fortune, you'll earn some cents, and the advertiser will drop the ad when they see the CTR agaisnt conversion....

                     Demonstrating your ignorance once again? All that will do is get that person smart priced, and cost them money in the long run.
                     
                     If you have a problem with any advertiser, you can merely add them to your competitive ad filter and you will not see them any more.

   yes, you can block ads as long as you know the URL.
   
   the search bots don't read the article, as I'm sure you know, they pick up the key words.
   
   did you try adding some new tags that may bring in different ads?
   or your subject headlines?

   Ad blocking will only be effective during the 60% of the time, when your AdSense codes are associated with your Hubs.  All bets are off when the HubPages codes run.

   Had the same problem on a hub about how i thought it was wrong to OUTSOURCE american jobs, but then the ads were for outsourcing and ticked me off... so I added a few words like work etc. to the tag list and they jumped to first in the list. After that it started streaming ads for getting work which made me feel better, but at the same time did not want to delete the outsourcing tag since it was a main topic of my article and needed readers to find it based on that keyword... try adding evironmental cleanup or a few like that to the tags and when it reorders see if you can get one to jump higher in priority to the plastic tag and that might help . i'm pretty sure the hubmetric stat is connected to the highest paying keyword tags and thats why they reorder ,so the tag has to be a moneymaker to reorder higher than plastic. Hope this helps!

   This is an interesting subject. I wrote a hub about child sex abuse, and the adds that popped up showed almost naked breasts, and a dating service. Talk about insensitive. Another detracting article about Glenn Beck got loaded with anti-Obama ads. So it's certainly obvious no intelligence exists behind the selection.

   Somehow TRASHING my thread with concealed kitty commments seems appropriate.  I just hope there are no plastic bags involved with the kitty (^__^)
   
   When my first hub appeared, there were ads for adult videos and dating services that had absolutely nothing to do with what I was writing about.  Eventually, this straightened out, however, and the ads seemed to become more aligned with the hub's content.
   
   Now I'm well on my way to becomming a zillionaire through AdSense. [Audience laughs uncontrollabley]
