Make sure you periodically check your links

   A few moments ago I googled in my keyword for my website which has been #1 on google, yahoo and msn for a good 6 months.  I don't usually check the link but for some reason this morning I did.  It came up as a fatal error.  I immediately called the sitebuilder to report the problem and asked for free service this month.  They would check into the problem and call me back.  Within 5 minutes I received a call back.  They said it was only down 15 minutes because they were transferring to another server and 15 minutes did not warrant a free month.  Does this seem reasonable?  I know there probably isn't anything I can do, it's only their word against mine but at least they could have sent an email to me.  I'm not sure I believe them.  But anyways this is a reminder to periodically check your links.  Dottie

   I think 15 minutes break is understandable. Unless your life depends on it and/or you are expecting a milliion visitors at that particular period of time.

      I agree SunSeven that 15 minutes is understandable.  I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt but how do I know for sure that the link was broken for lets say 2 weeks or more?  But everything is back on track, I will be sure to check link more often.  Thank you for responding.

   Dottie1, you bring up some good questions.
   
   About whether the response you got from your sitebuilder was fair or not, they probably have a published policy about under what conditions they will reimburse fees.  Check out that policy and see if your situation merits a reimbursement.
   
   About checking links in general, I'm pretty sure there is link checking software out there, but I have no experience with it.  It would be very useful to be able to run through the links on all your pages (here and anywhere else) on a regular basis, so that you can fix anything that's broken. 
   
   Does anyone have any suggestions about this kind of software? Or about other methods for checking links?

         SunSeven, I think "broken link" is a bit of a confusing term, although it is the one I know to describe what happens when you have a link which now goes nowhere because the owner of the object site has deleted the material being linked to. 
         
         Hope that doesn't confuse things more!

   I am sorry to say this to you. But if you have a 100 hubs with, say 500 links, in them how will you go about checking them. I wouldn't.

      We're actually working on something to alert you of broken links in your hubs.  It will probably only check each hub once a week or so, but it should make it fairly easy to keep your links working.  Look for it toward the end of this month.

   15 minutes is reasonable and the explanation is plausible but you do have some recourse to see if they are being honest.
   
   For example, you can check the Google cache of that page. It's dated so if the problem is in the cache you know they were likely lying.
   
   Or, possibly your analytics account will show a sudden prolonged dip in traffic to a certain page (or site) which might mean your site has been down longer than 15 minutes.
   
   Or you can log into your Google webmaster tools account and check for crawl errors...
   
   Or - you get the idea :p
