What Makes a NY Times Best Selling Author?

   Does learning how from publishing industry insiders at FREE webinars have any appeal???  If so, I'll cough up the talent, time, and money to make it happen! Need feedback.

      I'm betting she's going to ask you to attend a "free" webinar that will discuss lots of industry stuff including some sort of advice/editing/educational services that aren't free.
      
      Might be wrong.  But I doubt it.

         I'm cynical too because "bait and switch" is in the air we breath! But my question was sincere.  If you have any time, please read my other replies. If you already know why books are turned down by a publisher, you'll get your book published in no time (perhaps you have already).

      After my first book contract was signed, the publisher asked me for a detailed marketing plan for my book - SHOCK.  Excluding well-known authors, I was not aware that less than a 1,000 books of one title are sold with 250 being the average!  That was 10 years ago.  So I combined my 20-year background as a management consultant with learning everything I could about publishing in order to help writers learn what they must do to get published - NOT self-published BUT published.  I've met a lot of power-people now and don't want a DIME from anyone.  If there is enought interest, I'll be able to attach a sponsor.

            Shadesbreath - the world's on edge anymore with millions of skeptics like you and ME - and this sounds stupid (I KNOW) but I'm guessing the three LOL faces for Rafini MEANS Rafini thinks we're both nuts. 
            
            Maybe Rafini is right.  I can see my efforts would be wasted and appreciate everyone saving me from ending up with EGG on my face when I ask the Power-Folks to help writers. 
            
            The one rule of business is this: ONE MAY NOT EXPLOIT THE POWER-FOLKS - EVER. It takes years to build a solid image and trust with inside circles.

            I know who Oprah is but I'm not familiar with what you mean by replying with the word "Oprah."  The only thing I can think of is Oprah's book recommendations on her show earn her 15% commission from Amazon with each book sold.  Is that what you mean?  I want to sell you something?

               Nope, I was answering your original question "what makes a NY Times best selling author." 
               
               Getting your book into Oprah's book club or getting on her show will make you a best selling author.  That is what I meant.

   A good publicist.  Have you ever read some of the crap on the Times best selling list?  What a joke.  I can't write better than many of them and I'm a hillbilly.

      Everything you say is true, Tobey100.  And this is my point.  The publishing industry hasn't changed ONE BIT since the 1600's!  What it did do was change what it called itself from "PRINTER" to "PUBLISHER."  NOT ONE publisher - giant to micro - markets an author's book.  That's stupid and they wonder why their sales are dropping like flies.

         I totally agree.  I'm holding on to a finished book right now I'm not submitting till a find a publisher that might actually back it.

         I think their sales on books are down because in previous years they had no competition.  Now with the Kindle and soon the iPad to download digital books, they finally have some real concern.  Serves them right for peddling hard covers for a month before paperbacks come out.
