"The happiness of society is the end of government."
John Adams 1776
That is very profund. If we are happy we don't need them. Is this whay they keep creating problems, instead of solving them?
...not sure exactly what you are referring too...but both society and government are creating problems...are they not?
Yes-- but as in the original quote, if the people were happy with themselves (being responsible and honest), they wouldn't be creating problems, either.
The "end" of government? Now, you're stretching even the imagination on that one.
The World would have to be completely at peace for that to happen. That means, every individual on the planet is 100% self-responsible about their life and has integrity when dealing with others.
However, since I don't see those two coming together anytime soon, I guess we can dispense with the "end of the government" kind of talk.
Just a thought, you should be aware of. Have fun.
Can't believe I agree with Cagsil on this.
We have to have some form of government.
And at first I was 100% with "We The People".......but I'm not sure the majority has the correct focus anymore. Which brings me back to the notion that America was meant to be a Republic and should remain one. At least, if that means there are certain basics that are set in stone and then we go from there.
But yeah, it should be the government that fears (or is accountable TO) the people, not the people who fear government as a whole.
Yes we obviously do-- because not all of the people are happy responsible and honest. "IF..." was a big word in the quote.
But 'if' more people were more that way, we would need less government.
What's wrong Brenda? Didn't think we could agree on anything? Believe it or not, we have a lot more in common than you might think. Just because we differ on the religion topic, doesn't mean we do not see eye-to-eye on other things. It should not surprise you at all, but your religious view is the problem. But, enough of that.
Anymore? When did you finally take notice? It's been happening for a great number of years.
Yes, America should be a Republic. The Government handles the domestic and foreign threats. All other things should be the individual's sole responsibility. If things were to be set in stone- it would have to be agreed upon by ALL of the citizens. That means, many problems need to be cleaned up, before the ship can be righted.
Agreed!!! The Government should be afraid of the people.
Big,
Without government there is no country. You would have no laws; so what happens then?
They're like officials, they should be invisible not the main attraction.
The Republic form where government deals with domestic security and foreign threats. Otherwise, they mind their own damn business.
You think the Federal Government is one big War Department.
I think people should be self-responsible enough to take care of themselves without having to depend on government programs to live.
Slavery was dead years ago, yet people who go to work at meaningless dead-end departmentalized non-making money offices are just a control factor government uses as a tool.
The Employment program is a Federal Program.
The Minimum Wage program is a Federal Program.
The Social Security program is a Federal Program.
The Medicare and Medicaid are programs subsidized by Federal Authorities.
Where and When does one become responsible for their own damn life?
We should take care of the poor aged, disabled, and the helpless.
Those programs like Social Security and all that are good programs.
Obama is trying to Federally "socialize" everything, not just what's needed.
Ask yourself this---why has he even forwarded the Census Department to himself?
This is a misconception, brought on by ignorant people who refuse to learn or adapt.
Do you really understand the "concept" of the "Social" / "Security" program?
By all rights, even if you paid into it, you should get nothing out of it, IF you provided yourself a retirement account or IRA or Pensions or other benefits you receive.
Once you have provided for yourself- the reason for continuing to pay into it "SOCIAL" assistance to those who cannot be self-reliant. It was put in place for those who work meaningless damn jobs and are not smart/wise enough to plan for the future, because they are too damn busy worrying about the present situation they are already in.
The complete socialization of America will bankrupt the Nation.
There are too many homeless and poverty stricken families, the financial stress these people are going to be under is simply too much. There could, in theory, start to see a bunch of suicides come about, because too many homeless citizens will not be able to buy insurance per the mandate and will most likely begin looking for other options and when that fails, they will end their life, because all options that they can see will have been exhausted.
I don't care why he wants the consensus. It's irrelevant anyways. The consensus is only per household and doesn't even come close to account for all the citizens.
And since we are on the topic of Self-Responsibility...I just published a new hub on it.

I'm gonna read yours--
I did a take on the subject, too.

The full quote from John Adams is below -
READ THE LAST SENTENCE.
" Upon this point all speculative politicians will agree, that the happiness of society is the end of government, as all divines and moral philosophers will agree that the happiness of the individual is the end of man. From this principle it will follow that the form of government which communicates ease, comfort, security, or, in one word, happiness, to the greatest numbers of persons, and in the greatest degree, is the best."
John Adams - Thoughts on Government 1776
We just granted 'ease, comfort and security' with Health Care Reform. It's nice to hear the echo of affirmation from one of the founding fathers.

Anarchy, they say, is the best form of government. As it is possible only in Utopia, can't we try for a single universal nation with a single government (the second best) instead of the separate nations we are now. That can at least sort some of the problems world is facing now. America's...

Hah! Do you think John Adams meant this as "written in stone?"Do you think he intended it in the vein of a "Zero Tolerance" position?I don't! I think it should be our Golden Rule, and like gold I think if should have a little malleability.Yes, I admit it. In mass human dealings,...

Aside from the impact on people who fail in life and wouldn't have a government to help them out, are their any negatives to a society that offers no social programs (in my thoughts this would be except disability)?

America is NOT a democracy! To understand the difference between a democracy and a REPUBLIC, read on, and you'll realize why the health care bill is unconstitutional!"A Republic, if You Can Keep It" Written by John F. McManus Monday, 06 November 2000 11:31 The...

I'm not attempting to swat a hornet's nest here. I just keep hearing the refrain "no government is good government" or words to that effect.According to the tea-party folks I've spoken to government is wasteful, bloated, and ineffectual. Which makes me wonder; where do we draw a line? Is...
