That depends on what you like and how you play. Also, if your computer is more robust, there are some amazing graphical enhancements.
Nexusmods has a lot of great mods on it (and some that suck). Here's a link to the top 100 on there: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/to … e/?adult=2
There are around 20 that I won't play without. Rather than give you a list from me, there are two lists that are really helpful. GEMS and STEP:
GEMS (Gameplay Enhancement Mods) http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/23826/?
STEP (Skyrim Total Enhancement Project) http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11/?
These are lists put together by a bunch of testers and they offer different kinds of improvements to look at. They made it easy for me to find far too many really good options.
Enjoy.
The SkyUI overhaul has become all but standard for most modders, so I would recommend getting it first. And I would also recommend the follower overhaul mod. I don't remember the exact name of it, but if you enjoy having a variety of helpers on your journey, it's a really useful mod. The Skyrim Nexus is really the best place to go. Just click on their top mods list and you can't go wrong with any you find there. (Also download their mod manager as it makes installing and removing much easier.)
I agree with you on both these, especially Sky UI, which I probably should have mentioned. The follower overhaul is probably UFO (Ultimate Follower Overhaul).

Just got Skyrim, what mods would you recommend? One of my favorite aspects of Oblivion was the vibrant mod community. I just got a copy of Skyrim and I was curious what mods veterans would recommend. I'm going to play the core game first, but any suggestions will help me focus my future searches....

I'm looking for a new RPG game to play. Is skyrim as good as they say, or should I get another game?I loved playing Fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas didn't do it for me. Just felt recycled. Please post any suggestions you may have. And if you are supporting Skyrim, Please SPOILER FREE.Thank you

Have you ever gotten upset at a game...because you beat it?I have...a few times to be exact...my list would include Infamous 2, Skyrim and now Dishonored. You've enjoyed the game so much, spent many enjoyable hours into it, then you finally beat it and it's all over...it just really makes me sad....
