4 Things To Do To Prevent Panic Attacks

Updated on July 6, 2009

If you suffer from panic attacks you can feel like you do not have any control of your life or your destiny. As soon as an episode is triggered, it can feel like you are in the midst of something similar to that of a heart attack. When you understand what causes panic attacks you will be able to work towards methods in order to cure or prevent them. Her are a few ways to help prevent a panic attack.

  • Understand the route cause
  • Alter your environment
  • Invest in your health
  • Avoid activities that trigger panic attack episodes

Understand The Route Cause

Although it has now been medically and scientifically proven that panic attacks are real and serious, it is up to the individual sufferer to try and figure out why they have been afflicted with this condition.

Everyone feels some levels of anxiety at some time in their lives so why is it particularly strong in certain people?

One way to help sort out the route cause is to talk to a specialist whose area of expertise lies in dealing with people who have high levels of anxiety.  Once you are able to talk to someone about your situation, you may be surprised to find that you can actually pinpoint the exact time that you experienced your first attack.  Once you are able to uncover this information, you will be able to cure the attacks completely.

Alter Your Environment

The surroundings that you live in can affect your whole well being.  It is very common for people from small towns to suffer from panic attacks when they move to a bigger city.  The constant buzz of people and traffic can have an adverse effect and create inner turmoil.  If this is contained for too long, a person can crack under the pressure and anxiety levels can rise. Some people can become uncharacteristically violent while others, those who get panic attacks, get a sharp pain in their chest and have difficulty breathing.  Sometimes the prevention is to change your environment and to move somewhere more conducive to your temperament.

Invest In Your Health

If you do not provide your body with the nutrition that it needs you will make it harder for yourself.  To help combat anxiety, ensure that you are eating a balanced diet.  Excellent food for the brain includes vitamins, omega 3 rich foods and a good amount of protein.  It is a good idea to reduce or even cut out your intake of alcohol as too much can have a negative effect on your overall well being.

Avoid Activities That Trigger Panic Attack Episodes

If you are already aware of certain things that trigger or heighten your sense of anxiety, you should wherever possible, eliminate these things from your daily routine.  If you know, for example, that crowds are a worry to you, try to time your outdoor excursions to times when there are less people around.  If panic attacks occur while driving, find out if there is an alternative route or different mode of transport available to get to your destination.
