Aging is like an illusion, how fleeting is a lifetime!
Aging is like an illusion, how fleeting is a lifetime! | Source

Time is a concept. Aging is a mindset.

Source

On my 18th birthday, I was given a party

To celebrate a new beginning

It signals adulthood and that child’s play is over

A reminder was given to be wise and smart

For any decision I make will affect my future.

Now, it’s a whole new world to explore and conquer

The waves of enthusiasm continuously flow

But, adulthood came without any instructions

I have to deal with it graciously, learn as I go

So, the world could be proud and I can shout.

I’ve made it to the top with love intact my heart

I’ve fallen and failed, laughed and cried

Yet, I graciously pick up myself over again

Cheerfully welcomed the challenges of life

Reciprocating bitterness with a sweet smile of revenge.

I’ve grown beyond my own meager years

I cannot maintain this human form

Aging is like an illusion, how fleeting is a lifetime!

Look one more time on my radiant face

Before the dusk sets in and I fade away.

My aging body may become weak and frail

But my wandering soul will be at peace not weep

For I’ve humbly and respectfully aged graciously

So, when the wind chime and the earth comes calling

I’ll look up to the sky, quietly close my eyes and gracefully exit.

Quick Poll

Do you believe in aging graciously?

What a lovely way to express yourself. I always admire when people can grow old gracefully. Growing old can sometimes be a scary thought because we don't know what to expect from our minds, and bodies. Great hub.

margaretdefelice: Be hopeful my fellow hubber...enjoy life everyday and if I may share with you my personal mantra: "Whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its shame and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. So, be cheerful and strive to be happy." --CrisSp

This is excellent, I loved the line 'before the dusk sets in and I fade away.' Very atmospheric and the message running through the poetry is so true. Fab.

I think I want to enjoy my youth and my health, and be thankful for these blessings. Some others are not so lucky. In the next life it begins again and then again. So time seems relative. Time is just time. But it's not as important as Life.

I like the phrase "adulthood came without any instructions...I've learned as I go." It's so true! What a good reminder that age is just an illusion and we should embrace life with courage and anticipation of what's to come. Thanks for an uplifting and beautiful poem!

Hi CrisPp... aging is something we will all need to face. Aging gracefully is an option we have where we can stand back and look at what we have accomplished during out time. I see grace, beauty and pose in your writing and my suspicion the same applies in your life.

Loved the song Dust in the Wind...

      Hugs from Alberta

Great write Crisp! When I was younger I loathed the thought of aging. Surprisingly, I take great comfort in the aging process, the maturity that comes with it. The things I held so important in my younger days no longer matter to me.

      Wonderful attitude my friend.

Collin dear, always good to see you. And, much as I love life, I don't think I'd like to live up to 94. God bless these people but I'm ok up to 65 the most or I'll be going back to my second childhood and will find it hard to remember where's my eyeglasses when it's in fact right on my face.

But, thank you kindly. The black dress is well in tact.

Merry Christmas to you and the kitties. Keep well my dear. *hugs*

@hawaiianodysseus: I think the older we get the more sentimental get we and so, what better way to express our sentiments but to jot it down and read it to ourselves. People tend to read than listen, including me. (: Thank you hawaiianodysseus for gracing my day. Always happy to see you.

Thank you Bill. The feeling is mutual. I once dread it too. When I was younger, I told myself I'm retiring at "35"...didn't happen. Guess, life must go on, no matter what. For now, I'm embracing all that I have, imperfections included.

      Hugs back to you!
