It's her Birthday!

Birthdays should be celebrated. It is a special occasion for contemplating and rejoicing at the same time. However, as we grow older, we also grow deeper and slower and birthdays are not celebrated the way we used to do from sweet sixteen to wild parties of our younger days. And no, we don’t necessarily get boring. We only learn how to embrace the phases of our lives and then we begin to realize, we don’t need to party long and hard anymore to celebrate. We’ve been through it all. We blew the candles, eat the cake and drunk the wine at once. We wanted to be fast and faster. Now, all we want is to be calm and calmer. Maybe still drink some wine but only just to rewind the good memories.

It's her birthday

No cake to fill her waist in

Why not fix breakfast?

Why not fix breakfast

On this gloomy winter day

It's her birthday!

It is her birthday

She fixed herself some breakfast

Mending her hunger.

Mending her hunger

Toasts and egg on a red plate

Black coffee brewing.

Black coffee brewing

She is cold and starving

Breakfast will fill her.

Breakfast will fill her

Mind, body and the whole soul

To keep her all wired.

To keep her all wired

Despite her silvery hair

She gobbled with grace.

She gobbled with grace

Alone in the breakfast nook

It's her birthday!

Borrowed from Meryl Streep and exactly my sentiments:

“I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship, I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And, on top of everything, I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.” ~

Meryl Streep quoted these as words she lives by and I'm borrowing them...all of them!

Belated happy birthday. Birthday is one of the special days to remember. I prefer to spend my precious time with my family and eat at the same time in the dining table. Best wishes to you and your love ones.

One one's birthday, the simple pleasures should be allowed with good grace, even if some people think they are frivolous. As long as one is happy, that's all that matters, at any age.

There are many ways to celebrate a birthday. I agree that the older we become, it is the simpler pleasures with those we love that makes all the difference. And who couldn’t love great eggs on warm toast and putting our feet up on the coffee table, dressed in our warm PJ’s? I had to chuckle when I read Streep’s sentiments. Either she’s channeling my diary, or I’m channeling hers. :-)

I agree that birthdays are a time for celebration. That celebration doesn't have to be a party or anything big. It can be a quiet contemplation of life.

And I too share Ms. Streep's sentiments!

The years fly by don't they. Sometimes I wonder how it happened to me. Birthdays do bring back memories of those 'heady' days. While I now enjoy quiet family birthdays I also still meet up with friends for lunch and laughter.

Meryl says it all! Best wishes and Happy Birthday.

I surely do like getting older. I do not have to want to have or attend parties anymore and especially on my birthday. Perhaps I am just a curmudgeon. This was a great read and I thank you for it.

Happy Birthday, Cris! Your birthday breakfast looks delicious. Yes, we are slowing down and the BIG birthday plans of the past are not really want I like this day. I like spending time with immediate family or just my husband and I at home. I guess that is what getting older does and I love it. I practice a lot of what Meryl Streep does! Life is too short for all that other stuff.

(((Hugs))) and blessings and may you continue to sparkle so genuinely in this life ...
