Should I become an organ donor?

Updated on September 11, 2013

Be a hero

Should I become an organ donor? Many have asked the question, many have taken the leap.

Becoming an organ donor is something I've been giving serious thought to recently. Actually, I have Wanda Sykes to thank for my renewed interest in the subject. I was watching her most recent comedy special and she did a bit about donating organs, which got me to thinking once again about...

Becoming an organ donor

So, why wouldn't I become a donor? If I compile a list of pros and cons, the pros seem to win outright. Maybe laziness is a factor, never really making time to perform the 'housecleaning' issues surrounding the final moment.

Maybe I've always harbored a deep-seeded inferiority complex, thinking that maybe my organs wouldn't be worthy of transplant. Lord knows, I've done some damage to my body over the years, and I guess I couldn't bear to hear that my liver was no longer a viable option for even the sickest of available recipients.

For me, the decision whether or not to donate my organs in the case of my untimely passing has centered around general procrastination and overall laziness. Never having researched the subject thoroughly, I've never put myself in the position of being able to make an informed decision.

Well, I'm gonna rethink the whole thing, get something done. I don't really have any religious responsibilities to think of, so just before they've torched my lifeless body, I may as well let 'em reap the harvest from my inanimate shell.

I think I'm leaning toward 'yea' on this one, now I just need to get it done when I renew my license in March. That is how it works, right? I need do nothing more than state at the DMV that I would like to be considered an organ donor, so my license will reflect my intentions, should I meet my demise while out and about?

I would imagine that a big part of becoming an organ donor would be to also consider filing a living will with legal counsel in order to keep everything tidy in a legal sense. Admittedly, I haven't even completed this crucial step, but then again I don't really own anything that any reasonable person would put up a fight to own in the event of my untimely passing. that's not an excuse really, just a fact. The excuse I have for not having put together a will is that I'm borderline lazy and a notorious procrastinator. The problem with procrastinating something of this magnitude is that there really is no way to know when the deadline is set for. It could be tomorrow, could be next week, may not be for another 40 years.

All in all, I think it's time to set my affairs in order, get everything out on the table. Who knows; Maybe somebody is dying to get a hold of my DVD collection or my shot glass collection of amassed from every important personal vacation stop across the U.S.

March 1, 2010 - I just returned from the DMV. It was time to renew my drivers license after the five year expiration was approaching. I did indeed answer yes to the question of whether or not I would like to be listed as an organ donor. Probably should've made the leap many years ago, I'm not sure why I didn't.
