Review of Jillian Michael's 'Extreme Shed & shred' DVD

Extreme Shed & Shred DVD:

A tough but totally do-able workout DVD from the ever encouraging and enthusiastic Jillian Michaels. 'Extreme Shed & Shred' is not as horrifying as the title may convey but is brutal enough to get you into shape, sculpt your body and lose weight FAST. I personally enjoyed exercising with Jillian on this particular DVD when i was just starting to work out after a very long period of not exercising at all. Bearing in mind i was relatively fit and healthy but also generally very un-toned, I found this DVD at the ideal level for me when combining levels 1 & 2.

The DVD is split into levels 1 & 2. Beginners are to do level 1 only which lasts approximately 30 minutes. When you feel comfortable completing level 1 you are then encouraged to do both levels 1 & 2 together which lasts an hour. Jillian combines various exercise tecniques such as brazilian martial arts, kick boxing and yoga all in simple formats for a full body workout rather than just focusing on specific parts of the body. She also mixes sculpting exercises with high impact, short bursts of cardio so that you are burning calories as well as sculpting. It is this vital combination that see's you lose pounds as well as seeing noticeable definition in your over all body shape and for me personally this tends to work as a much stronger incentive for sticking to exericse on a regular basis!

Pros:

  • A good mix of exercise tecniques to properly work out the whole of your body as well as keeping you interested.
  • I lost a stone when combining this DVD with 'Killer Buns & Thighs' and '6 week 6 pack'. I lost 2 inches around my waist and 3 inches off my thighs. I started seeing results after about 10 days.
  • Jillian's two exercise buddies. One for the beginner and one for the more advanced. I often switched from one to the other depending on the exercise. You should not therefore feel like any of the exercises are too easy or too hard, so there really is no excuse!
  • The whole DVD is quick. Even if you do find this tough going you will be incentivised by the fact that you're always nearly finished. I personlly feel far more able to push myself when the exercises are really starting to hurt if i know i won't be doing it for very long. Jillian has been very skilled at achieving this kind of workout as it's tough enough to make your body hurt, push it to a limit and get into shape but equally never impossible, never too brutal for you to completely give up. This is a rare quality in any workout DVD i've tried and something that is vital for sticking to this kind of exercise on a regular basis. This is also enivtably the only way to achieve long lasting results. I have found this to be the case for all the Jillian DVD's I have tried.
  • Jillian is highly motivational, fun, encouraging and even a bit maternal! She makes you feel like you've climbed Mount Everest with the earnest praise she delivers after you've completed your workout!

Cons:

  • Although both levels 1 & 2 are more than enough to keep you fit and lose a few pounds, a level 3 may have been nice to progress on to.
  • If I were in the habit of exercising on a regular basis and was in good shape I'm pretty sure I would have found this slightly too easy. Although you can always add weights to make it harder you would most probably get bored and so I would recommend the Bum & Thigh workout DVD used in conjunction with this DVD or just a generally harder exercise DVD if you feel you are already quite fit.

In summary a good jillian DVD to start off with if you've never bought any of her other DVD's before. It does seem slightly more simple, straightforward and dare i say it a tad easier than the Killer Buns & Thighs DVD which I have also reviewed. However It is for this reason you might also feel more comfortable at sticking with it rather than just gibing up until you get the results that you want. I would therefore recommend this DVD to anyone who is healthy (i.e not underweight or overweight) and is looking to tone up and lose a few pounds. It will probably be ideal for someone who wants to get back into exercise after a break as the exercises are tough enough to tone up your body and burn calories but are not overly uncomfortable like a lot of other workout DVD's i've tired.
