What is the difference between Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism?

   What is the difference between Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism?
   
   Is there a way to treat them with herbal medicines rather than synthetic medications?

   Hyper-over active, hypo-underactive.  I think the only way to treat is with traditional meds

   Hyper is overactive (most of these are Graves disease), hypo is underactive (Cushings disease). I haven't written anything on Cushings, but here is a hub on an overview of Graves:

   My mother has both hyper and hypo hyper is over active and hypo is under active im not sure about the medication thing if you have qushtions you should ask a doctor

   I am have hypothyroidis. Hypo means you have an underactive thyroid. The only way to treat it is with medication to replace what the thyroid no longer produces enough of. However, if your dose is too high then you can become hyperthyroid, meaning your body is getting too much thyroid hormone. Neither feels good and so it is best to get regular blood work done to measure the amount of hormone in your system.
   
   No herbal medicine can replicate the thyroid hormone. But if you are looking for something more natural then Armour thyroid is made from pig thyroids and it is not synthetic (taken that one in the past). Some think it is better than synthetic hormone (Synthroid is the one I take) but honestly I don't know if I feel one is superior to the other having taken them both over the years (at different times of course).

   hyperthyroidism means the thyroid increases the metabloism = weight loss
   hypothyroid means thyroid decreases the metabolism = weight gain

   1.thin
   2.heat intolerance
   3.everything is up except your GIT and GUT function thats why you have diarrhea that leads to wt.loss and cessation of menses
   
   hypothyroidism
   1. fat
   2. cold intolerance
   3.wt.gain
   4.decrease heart rate
   5.everything is down except your GIT and GUT functions thats why you have constipation

   The difference between the two is that hyperthyroidism your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone while the hypothyroidism is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain important hormones and both manifest goiter.
   The other difference are signs and symptoms. In hyperthyroidism there is increased activity of bowel movements, difficulty in sleeping, intolerance to heat, nervousness and palpitation, increased respiratory rate, increased moisture of the skin, increased metabolic rate, soft and fine hair, wandering mind, sweating, scanty menstrual periods, infertility, muscle weakness, nervousness and soft nails.
   While hypothyroidism manifestations are opposite  to hyperthyroidism such as bradycardia or  decreased heart rate, constipation, intolerance to cold, memory problems, coarse dry hair, slow speech movements, slow walking movements, dry skin, brittle nails, weight gain, fatigue, irritability, infertility, puffy face, loss of eyebrow hair, and heavy menstrual periods.
