Varicose veins are enlarged, sometimes bulging veins that appear under the surface of the skin. They are caused mainly due to the deterioration of vein valves that are responsible for pushing the blood to the heart against the gravitational pull.
Currently, most varicose veins are treated with minimally invasive procedures that are performed in doctors' offices. The two best treatments for the largest of the veins, the saphenous veins, are the VNUS Closure treatment, and EVLT (endovenous laser treatment). Both procedures are endovenous in their approach; that is, a diseased vein is accessed and treated from inside the vein. The VNUS procedure uses a radiofrequency catheter to heat and seal the vein; whereas, EVLT uses a laser proble. Foam sclerotherapy, a precedure whereby a medicine is injected in the form of foam directly into the diseased vein is another approach for treating varicose veins. However, foam sclerotherapy is more suitable to treat branch varicosities, not the largest of the veins.
