The thyroid gland which is located in the neck produces hormones that are released into the bloodstream in order to control your body's growth and metabolism. When there are an excessive amount of thyroid hormone in your bloodstream, that is when you develop the medical condition called hyperthyroidism.

Some of the symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism are fatigue, heart palpitations, sudden weight gain or weight loss, hyperactivity. Your appetite tends to increase and you might become very sensitive to heat. Other signs and symptoms are insomnia, frequent bowel movement, irritability, emotionally unstable, loss of interest in sex, warm and damp skin and more.... You will not necessarily have all of these symptoms. For some reason, there are more women who are affected by this medical condition than men.

What causes Hyperthyroidism?
The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Grave's disease, which is an autoimmune condition where your body mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland. When the thyroid gland is attacked by the autoimmune condition, it ends up producing too much thyroid hormone, which in turns make your thyroid overactive. It is not clear what triggers this disease. This disease can run in families. Let say you have a sister or a brother who is diagnosed with this disease, it is important to make sure you tell your doctor about it, so you can get the proper tests done.
How Is This Disease Diagnosed?
The way this disease is diagnosed is when you start noticing some of the symptoms mentioned above, you go see your doctor who will ask you a few questions; he will do a physical examination, then he will have you do some tests.
As I stated before, a lot of the symptoms are not obvious in the early stage of the condition, so the doctor may not know that you have this disease and as result, you may find yourself not being diagnosed for a long time. It took some patients months to years before getting the proper diagnosis.
Is This Disease Simple To Treat?
Once you have been diagnosed with this disease, some doctors might have you believe that it is an easy fix, but what I can tell you is this: do not let the doctors pressure you into choosing a treatment option right away without doing your own research on the matter. There are many treatment options to choose from, but for some reason, a lot of times doctors seem to want patients to go with the most invasive one, so make sure you know your options and choose the one that is right for you.
