Dump the flavored beverages, this is the lazy (or perhaps smart!) person's way to start losing weight. These beverages can pack hundreds of calories and don't fill you up any more than water.

I made this hub with this question in mind. I have a few tips from my struggles with weight loss, and there's some helpful links peppered throughout.

Don't focus on losing weight. It creates stress which can make you actually retain if not add more weight. Instead focus on trying to take better care of yourself through living a better/healthier lifestyle. RunnerJane33 gives a good first step.

Stop the drinks.  Diet drinks are especially sneaky.  They do not have calories themselves, but screw with your body regulatory systems, so they actually contribute to weight gain.  E.g., aspartame.

Old fashioned soft drinks, made with sugar, were not too bad, if drunk in moderation.  Soft drinks now, mostly use high fructose corn syrup, another body weight contributor.

Fruit "drinks" are similar to the soft drinks.  They usually have aspartame or high fructose corn syrup

Even too much real fruit juice can be bad.  Eating the actual fruit is preferable.

Finally, don't try to shed weight.  Replace the fat with muscle.
