Giving oxygen doesn't help all patients
Roughly half the patients of critical diseases given oxygen to help ease their breathing don't seem to benefit from the therapy.
of course. especially if the patients are breathing well!
only oxygen can not save a patient. we give oxygen as a ventilation support. normal room air contains only 21% oxygen mixed with all the other gases. that means from 100 parts air only 21 parts are usable. when the patient is having breathing problem it is best idea to give maximum output from minimum effort. so we give 100% oxygen. this gives relief to all the patients and metabolic acidosis is also corrected most of the times.
