http://hubpages.com/_1rfosdrnucsn9/hub/Should Female Circumcision be encouraged or discouraged?
Female circumcision otherwise referred to as female genital cutting or female genital mutilation is a practice in many societies including my country, Nigeria. Africa is a land of culture and tradition no doubt. Most of the cultures and traditions were inherited from our forefathers though we have grown old enough to know our likes and dislikes. Some of these cultures are being modified to suit modern times and reality.
There sometimes are medical reasons for male circumcision. There are no reasons for clitoral ablation; or for the stitching of the labia for any cause other than the repair of any childbirth damage. These are cultural practices designed to control women. The practice is banned in England, but still girls (mainly of African Islamic descent) are being sent to countries where it is allowed to have it done.
While one school of though holds sway for female genital mutilation, another school of though do not see any reason why the vagina should be mutilated or tampered with.
These various views cannot be condemned in its entirety; however, the question remains “should we continue female genital mutilation”?
