How many hours do we really need to sleep?

There are so many things that I wanted to do and I want to add more time to these. But we need to take time to sleep right? I am just wondering how many hours do we really need to sleep in a day?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no set number that applies to everyone.  Depending on your genetics, lifestyle and daily demands your body needs a different amount of sleep than the next person's in order to fully recuperate.  On average, most people need eight per night.

I think I remember coming across a study that said the 8 recommended hours were actually excessive for most and people that slept 6-7 hours, closer to 7 being ideal, were better off on average. Unfortunately, I can't remember the source or how people were better off(life expect ency, specific health issues, whatever else).

For me, I feel best with 6-9 hours. If I sleep more than 9 I tend to be tired all day and am slightly less energetic late in the day if I get less than 6.
