There isn't a definitive number. Facial expressions vary in the number of muscles that are used.
I believe the back of a matchox would say, "13 muscles to smile and 54 to frown; so why bother"? Or something like that? .... Cheers!
There are about 36 named facial muscles and not all of them are used to smile. It takes about 12 to smile 11 to frown.
Smile is always good, there are many health benefits of smile. How many muscles of the face are exercised, I don't know exact number.
