I use Ivarest.....found in most grocery stores or Walmart.  It is the only thing I use.  It takes away the itch, soothes the burning, and eventually dries it up.  Hope this helps!

Calamine is very good for poison ivy and any other itch that comes with an infection.  Calamine has about 0.5 % Zink oxyde. Zink oxyde is a great anty-irritant and desinfectant.
With bad bites, I apply first Solar Cayne, which is an anesthetic with aloe, and then I apply calamine. I also keep Zink oxyde and triple antibiotic cream in my first aids box.

You can use any anti-histamine available in the market or those containing cortisone and applied locally over the site of itching.
Anti-histamines prevents the itching action of histamine...
And cortisone prevents further release of histamine which causes the itching, redness and the burning sensation.
