There's a disorder, "Pica", which includes people's having an appetite/cravings for things like dirt and clay. It can be related to nutrition deficiency and/or mental/neurological disorders and development problems. Some pregnant women may experience it. It's more common in women and children. It has also been associated with Autism, among other disorders.
