Do you think that some people need to be in a methadone treatment program for life?
I'm addicted to opiates, methadone to be specific. First I took them because I suffer from clinical depression and 1 or 2 pills a day (10mg) the depression was gone. The addiction became a serious problem in my life. I had to depend on my Mom and my Aunt for the pills. Without going into a lot of detail I quit cold turkey. It was the most difficult 2 mo. of my entire life and I was 49 at the time. The next time I started methadone it was for legitimate back pain, again my Mom gave me the pills. Mom died and I had to start the clinic. I'm @ 115mg(stable). Even tapering 8mg a mo. is too much!!!
No, it is always possible to quit. Methadone is one of the most difficult drugs to withdrawal from. Many people I know went through an inpatient detox and rehab to get past the most painful symptoms and to replace the addiction with a healthy, happy lifestyle. If you really want to stop for life, it will take a lot of work on yourself and a good, supportive community to help you though it. In the long run, the hard work is worth it, because you will find a new sense of happiness and satisfaction with life.
I had an addiction specialist MD tell me that I would be on Methadone for the rest of my life. His reasoning; My opiate usage began at age 10 when my mother began treating my painful cycles with liquid Vicodin. Long story short by the time this doctor got to me I had decades of use, and his theory is that our brain stops producing chemicals it makes on its own when we continue over many years providing our brain with the chemical our selves. It just one day says "hey why do I need to produce this when I'm already getting it". So as scary as this is for me I believe it true. It all depends on the length of someones opiate usage and dosage. This MD basically told me my brain will NEVER produce the chemical again. I have never questioned this. So just passing on what was told to me. Good Luck
