What accounts for the self-hatred and the negativity among SOME Black celebrities in the
entertainment, modelling, and news arenas?
It's the same thing for everybody - black, white asian. The media leaves no room for diversity. You need to have specific features or you are unattractive and not bankable.
The media tend to want those who are homogenized in looks i.e. the ones that have the MOST crossover appeal. They want those with Caucasian-like features, this causes many w/strong ethnic features to physically assimilate in order to be more bankable.
OMG look at the Miss World pageant they're Stepford switch heads and nobody would notice.
Sorry girls I'm sure you are fantastic my comment is only about the pageant not the contestants.
I believe it's really up to the (individual) and what they (believe) they need. None of the hip/hop stars like P. Diddy (worth $500 Million), Jay-z (worth $450 Million), Master P (worth $350 Million), Dr. Dre (worth $300 Million), and countless others all the way down to Snoop Dogg and Little Wayne are people who have done nothing to change their appearance and they are hugely successful! MJ's biggest album was "Thriller" which was released while he was still dark. :-)
Other examples include Denzel Washington and Will Smith who both are often paid $20 Million+ a percentage to act in a single movie. Several years ago Eddie Murphy earned the same amount. Tyler Perry is said to have net worth of $400 Million, owns his own jet and movie studio! He never felt the need to make any physical changes.
Last but not least Oprah aka the Queen of Daytime TV worth almost $2 Billion could never be mistaken for anything other than an African American woman. As I said it comes down to (individual) choices.
One quick note: Whites and Latina's have been known to have nose jobs, breast/butt implants, dye their hair/add corn roll extensions, wear blue/grn contact lens, tan/change skin tones, act "street" and they're not accused of "hating themselves". hmmm
Of course, look at brunette Caucasians who dye their hair blonde to be more assimilable. Also Latinas in Hollywood from its heyday did the same e.g. Rita Hayworth who went from a dark brunette to a redhead.

I love going to the forums and seeing whats trending and learning from others, but just within the last 3-4 days I've come across so many negative questions or forums. Where is seems like the person starting the thread just wants to slam Hubpages and berate anyone who tries to offer help. I know no...
