Are there home treatment options for people who suffer debilitating social anxiety? Is medicine the only option?
Every person's disorder has both similarities and distinct, though perhaps subtle, differences. The book PsychoBabble by Richard Ganz (available from Amazon) is good food for thought and a great beginning for anyone actively seeking solutions.

In other instances seeing a therapist might help.
More often than not there was "trigger" or event which occurred that caused one to develop social anxiety. Sometimes as children we come up with various "defense methods" to protect ourselves from hurt and never shed them even after becoming adults.
It's hard to get ahead in life with social anxiety. I know people in my family who have no friends outside of the family and seldom leave home unless it's for work or to run errands. No social events!
It's not really a "treatment" but one of the most helpful things I did was to finally tell people about my social anxiety. Now friends are aware and they try their best to make things comfortable for me so I can join them in social events.
