A dentist could make a mouth guard so that your teeth aren't grinding against each other; this reduces tooth sensitivity and pain when eating. A TMJ guard is more expensive and invasive.
In terms of prevention, solutions range from treating the stress driving it to medical exams to determine other potential causes.
If your dentist can't give you much relief, you're going to have to visit a doctor, too.
