You have struck a nerve. I am the chief wrapper, and I am the least qualified to do so. I use the cheapest paper I can find in a multi-pack, usually at Wal-Mart. You do not want to waste the shiny stuff (especially foil) on me. After boxing the gifts and taping the boxes shut (I have children who like to snoop), I pick up a roll at random. I exhaust that roll and go on to the next. I try to cut in straight lines, but the cheap paper doesn't have grid-lines on the back. I do not use bags, though we have several DOZEN, because we have several HUNDRED department store boxes in boxes under the stairs. Yes, this is redundant. We use BIG boxes to store LITTLE boxes. If the item is too big to wrap--or if I have run out of paper (not usually)--I affix a single bow. I cannot say this is my favorite way to wrap--it's the ONLY way I wrap.
