My memories of 4th of July as a young child are based on our family tradition of spending the entire day, starting about 10am until at least midnight, at the Columbine Country Club in Denver, Colorado.
We always looked forward to that day of swimming, barbqued food, a great buffet dinner and then the massive fireworks display put on by the club.
When I was older, in my teens, I spent summers up at a ranch in the mountains in Colorado and there were never fireworks allowed, because of fire hazard.
I have two 4th of July memories that stand out in my mind at the moment. Our family traveled a lot and one year as we drove through several cities we were able to watch some amazing fireworks displays. The other was our family and friends going to a very large nearby park, we enjoyed a picnic, the zoo, an exciting RODEO and the fireworks display.
Every year on the 4th, we would go to Eufaula to see my great aunt and uncle. One year, I got to meet some cousins I'd never met. I had my first camera, so I took lots of pictures, and I got to play with a sparkler for the first time. It was just an awesome day.
When i lived back in my old house when my grams was still living , our house faced another block where a family friend lived so every yr my family mostly the kids would sit out side on the front lawn and watch as our friend would do his fireworks , and trust me when i tell you he had loads of them and a bit of his home made ones as well . not to mention he was a beer drinker so it made it more interesting as well he's still living old but still does his freedom fireworks every yr . God bless him .
