Everybody I speak with has a memory at Christmas time that sticks in their mind. I have several favorite memories. The one that becomes more special over time is when we had so much snow we couldn't travel. It was bad. So, me, my wife and daughter decided to stay home. My daughter got a book series for Christmas. We all took turns reading chapters of the book out loud and discussing the stories. We then went outside and went sled riding and went inside to a fire and hot chocolate. We had lost power so we cooked over the fire place. It was fun and a very cherished memory for all of us. I'm sure other people have such special memories.
This will sound cheesy, but I was merely a small child. It was just after one of the big Star Wars films, probably either the first or second one. Anyway, for Christmas, I got a Star Wars sleeping bag, and it was laid out in the living room, and on top of it were just about all the little Star Wars toys, including the Millennial falcon. The thing could do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, you know.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a great memory.
Many years ago I used to help in the Salvation Army store where toys were given out to those that couldn't afford a Christmas for their children. It was typically a sad, thankless task; many of our "clientele" were rude, cranky and far from in the Christmas Spirit. We had people defecate and/or urinate in the corner of the room as they didn't want to lose their place in line. People often took a bag and simply scooped toys until it was full; anything as long as they got "their share". Almost all complained as the line was long, it was cold and they might be there for 2 or 3 hours.
But one lady came in with a little girl, maybe 4 or 5 years old. They carefully went down the rows of toys, obviously picking and choosing for other siblings. Finished, they headed out when the little girl in pigtails and a plaid dress suddenly stopped dead, handed a doll she had chosen for herself to her mother and ran back across the room towards me. Throwing her arms around me, obviously scared to death at her own audacity, she gave me a hug, a kiss on the cheek and a whispered "Thank you!" and dashed back to Mom.
The greatest example of Christmas I've ever experienced, and nearly 40 years later I documented it in a hub on the meaning of Christmas. It will never be forgotten.
