A Step Along The Way
I wrote a different version of this poem a couple of years ago, for a friend that was dying. It's one of the hardest situations I've experienced in my life so far. I've edited it slightly to create the more universal version you read below.
I was moved the other day by lyricsingray's hub "There Was A Girl". Now, in light of the tragic news of her father's death, I've decided to publish this poem in the hope that it helps her and other people in similar situations to heal.
A Step Along The Way
Your life feels short, unfair it seems
That you couldn't stay here to fulfil all your dreams
But this doesn't mean that anything has ended
For if you hear what the people you've befriended
Are trying to convey:
Death is just... 'a step along the way'
There'll come a time when i'll wake at dawn
Somehow knowing that you are gone
Ashes to ashes - just like the phoenix
(The future is just never like what one predicts)
I hope that day never comes, but I know it has to
_____, you know i'm going to miss you...
Just the other day, we spoke for some time
Now here i am, making an attempted rhyme
To try and make the situation feel better
Tell me, why does God get to keep you forever?
Some things happen, I'll probably never know why
Those who are left behind can only grieve and cry
'Cause it's so, so hard to have to say goodbye
But you'll be with One who loves you much more than I...
_____, I'll never forget you, sweetie
Be good,
Love always,
