Day With Illusion
When you wake in your bed and the sun pours
Through your window soaking you in its warmth
That reminds you of an intimate dream
Of a lover who leaves when you open
Your eyes and you notice the empty bed
Showing an unfamiliar impression
Beside you warm from the sun then you know
A twilit dawn of between where physics
Flexes and perception melts into shapes
That striptease in peripheral vision
And resume commonplace as you turn
Seeing only graceful tree limbs instead
Where lithe extended arms swiveled your head
Leaving you to doubt your observations
As footsteps echo your own seemingly
Stopping a moment after yours have ceased
And in the store window a reflection
Beside and behind your own and not quite
A face but more like a trick of the light
A pentimento of some previous
Window shopper their image somehow there
Detained in some parallel universe
Where time moves comparatively slowly
Their moment being your day or decade
So here the translucent curve of shadow
Implying the elegance of a cheek
Remains imprinted in the light or mind
Not necessarily observing you
While you are quietly creative
Mysteriously out there in your kitchen
A pot shifts with a clank in the dish rack
The gradual effect of gravity
Or unseen hands compelled to adjust
Cookware or perhaps the trajectory
Of your reality or destiny
Returning to sleep perhaps you expect
The scarcely audible rustling of sheets
Seems to continue after you settle
Maybe anticipation arouses
Or maybe you feel the softest caress
That always knows exactly where to touch
And not merely your imagination
What is real and what is illusion? Some say that the physical existence - life - is an illusion. Some say it is an illusion that is forced upon us, and some say we choose to participate in the illusion. Clues are given. Occasionally we see the fabric fray or stretch and the curtain parts for a moment. Perhaps we witness an impossible event or someone we know experiences deja vu or prophecy, and we choose then either to adjust our understanding of space/time or simply shake our heads and go on with ... "our lives."
If life is an illusion, it is a beautiful illusion. In addition to being very convincing, it offers each individual a totally unique experience. Where else can you get that?
Illusion or reality, may yours be filled with happiness each and every moment.
