Updated on March 16, 2014

A Troubled Youth

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. She was able to get through a troubled childhood and adolescence to later move to Nashville, Tennessee to live with her father, Vernon.

Oprah entered Tennessee State University in 1971, majoring in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. While living in Nashville, she also started working in radio and television broadcasting.

In 1976 she moved to Baltimore, as host of the TV talk show, People Are Talking , which was a hit and Oprah stayed with the show for eight years. A Chicago TV station offered her a job she couldn't turn down as a host to her own morning show, A.M. Chicago .

Oprah's Farewell Surprise

Initially, the shows ratings dropped, yet Oprah held fast to her promise, earning her the respect she still has today from fans across the globe, and sending ratings through the roof.
