Random Thoughts - Things I think about while you're talking to me.

Updated on July 7, 2013

You always hear about being a better listener. How to be a better listener. It helps you communicate with, and understand the other person. Being a newlywed I know this is crucial in my relationship with my wife. At work, I need to listen to the customer's needs and expectations. With my friends, well, it's probably better that I don't listen to most of my friends.

On the flip side, you can always tell when someone isn't listening to you, uhuh, yeah, uhuh...So as I set out to become a better listener, I will have to stop thinking about random stuff while people are talking to me. What random stuff you ask? Here's a sample list of things that go in and out of my head while we're having a "conversation".

I wonder if the Mars Rovers are still roving? Spirit and....I can't think of the other one's name. I remember one got stuck and then could only go in reverse. They were only supposed to last a few years...crap what's the other one's name?

Do they still make rotary phones? And if so, why? I'm sure some people may still use them, but I wonder if they're still being made. It would be tough to text on a rotary phone...

I hate when people don't say thank you after you hold the door for them I'm being polite, how hard is it to say thanks? At least smile or something...

Why does my cell phone continuously beep to notify me that the battery is low? Now is the time to conserve, conserve!

When will the current mo-hawk trend end? There was Mr T, Bryan Bosworth, then nothing for 20 years. Came back strong a few years ago and shows no sign of fading.

How do women wear white pants? Do they avoid ketchup, mustard, chocolate, dirt, juice, wine, snow cones, magic markers, blood, motor oil, and all types of sauces?

Do atheists go to T.G.I.Fridays? I wonder if there's been a protest?

I really wish I had bought Netflix stock a few years back I'd be selling now but wow, that would have been a nice profit..

I have all of my wisdom teeth. I wonder if this would help me win a competitive eating contest?

Why don't the words tomb, bomb, and comb rhyme? They're spelled the same, shouldn't they sound the same? English must be near impossible to learn...

I need to check my air filters at home It's been quite a while, all of that dog hair just sitting in there clogging the vent... oh man...I should go check right now!

Man this guy really needs to floss more often.. Look away, now back, now away, now back, wait he asked me something..."Uh huh"

I should get a drum set Ive always wanted to learn how to play the drums. I'm not getting any younger. Anne would never go for that..

Why don't I like fishing? Everyone likes fishing, why not me. I like nature, it's so tranquil...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

When should I use a semicolon? I should know this...

How come I never have chap stick when I need it? I guess if I had it I wouldn't need it..

What did I do before Google?I think I looked things up in Wik --er the encyclopedia. Or I read a book, with pages.

I wonder how much false information I've read on Wikipedia? I could be walking around with a head full of misquotes...

Will they still make bookshelves? With Ipads and Kindles and all

Is falling satellite debris covered by homeowners insurance? Chances are slim that I'd be hit, but chances are slim that I'd hit the lottery and I fully expect to win that.

Being a professional mover would suck I hate moving day and it would be moving day everyday.

Are Zebras horses? Can you ride them?

I really hope that doesn't stink

These are just a few things I may be mulling over in my head while talking to someone. My goal is to maintain eye contact, listen to the other person and respond accordingly. As an adult I should be able to have adult conversations. I just need to focus and more importantly, listen. I really need to- OPPORTUNITY!! That's the other rover!!! Where was I? I really need to work on this...

Actually, it's not as rude to be thinking other thoughts while someone is talking as it is to wait with your mouth open, ready to talk the very INSTANT the other person stops talking (or pauses to take a breath).

      Voted Up and Funny!

The dreaded are you listening to me question, I've been hit with that one as well Rfordin, try as I might, if someone's going on and on I tune out. Thanks for reading and commenting!

While my thoughts are different during "conversations" I too lack the attention span to listen to things I feel are boring. Often times my friends chime in with "are you listening to me" to which I always respond "of course!". Good read I enjoyed hearing about your inner thoughts.

My inner thoughts tend to focus on all the other things I "should" be doing rather then sitting here listening to so and so's day. A good listener I am not. Oh well...... thanks again ~ Becky

And they say men can't multi-task! Your mind doesn't want to stick at just one thing, does it? I think you're more honest than a lot of people. Nice one. (Are you still reading?)

Not only are you a great writer, but you also have a fantastic sense of humor! This has been fantastic, I really enjoyed this. Much like everybody else, I also tend to drift off during conversations, especially when I already know what is coming from my interlocutor...

You could try repeating the last thing they said, and adding a question mark - this often helps :)

Oh this "True Confessions?" Must I? Well, OK. I think I may be guilty of even worse behavior. While I'm listening to someone gab on and on, I mentally correct their grammar, tone of voice, speech pattern...body's a wretched habit! I do quite the same thing when reading a letter or email. By the time I get to the last sentence, there are red marks everywhere, correcting grammar, spelling, sentence structure.....HELP!! WHY do I do this??

Guilty as charged! There are so many of us with this affliction, we should probably qualify for some type of federal aid...or at least get one of those really sad movie-of-the-week's about us. I can never pay attention to what people are saying to me.

Great hub, you got right into your brain there. You missed one of my favorites..."Why does this person that is talking to me think that I would be the least bit interested in what they are saying?" I loved your writing style. keep at it.

I have a friend who talks and talks and talks. Then suddenly he will change the subject matter and talk some more. I find it very hard to concentrate on him.

The poor guy is partually blind and lives out in the country with his mother so he is starving for attention.

      I try to listen politely.

    • weestro profile image

Slow talkers drive me crazy, I've usually moved on in my head to a third or fourth topic by the time they finish..

    • JamaGenee profile image

I have a cousin who talks soooooooooo slow that people can (and do!) hold entire conversations with other people between his words. Quite funny to watch, actually.

If your mind wanders so much when someone is talking to you, why don't you just do the "look at watch...Oops! Gotta go NOW" thing. (Be sure to be wearing a watch when doing this.) Works for me. But then I have no patience for boring people.

That said, when I was a CustServRep, a customer actually put me to sleep once. She was droning on and on...and on...for 20 minutes without taking a breath and I just nodded off. Luckily I didn't snore in her ear. Only woke up when I realized she was waiting for an answer to a question, enough of which had registered on the edges of the grey matter that I answered appropriately, and she said "thank you" and hung up. ;G

Goodness...same thing happens to that called our ADHD moment? or simply brain farts? Someone is talking and your mind drifts to their hair line or bald spot..cannot help it.

Do they make rotary phones? (good one) Kids now-a-days probably don't even know what one looks like. I know of one kid asking her mom.."what is a dictionary?" Everything's on the computer. It was an innocent question, the mom went to the store and bought a dictionary.
