Shark Fin Soup: A Poem

You Might Look Like Bait
You Might Look Like Bait | Source

Where earth fades to ocean, and human meets shark,

Beneath murky waters, churning and dark!

Perfected survival and arrogance meet,

Man against dinosaur - evolution complete!

Surfers soon dinner - in sharks dark domain,

Shark-bite-sized links in a no-holds-barred chain!

We splash, surf. and frolic - like sweet, juicy snacks,

Then scream bloody murder - when they naturally attack!

Exotic Treats

Why Can't They Get a Few?
Why Can't They Get a Few? | Source

How DARE they kill humans - they must be destroyed!

Cull all aggressors - boats now being deployed!

Simply doing what sharks do - yet go forth - decimate,

Mankind doesn't learn - just obliterates!

We don't kill just for vengeance - sharks have such yummy fins,

This planet's so off-kilter - one ponders how it spins!

SOUP is how we justify destroying these ancient beasts,

Hunted down from dusk to dawn cause they make exotic treats?

Biting Back!
Biting Back! | Source

So, advice for those going swimming - you look a lot like bait,

No hold on terra firma - so boldly tempting fate!

Humans on the half-shell - so much sexier than chum,

Leveling the field - it's time the sharks got some!

It's only fair, I'm thinking - if they take down one or two,

We kill them by the millions - why can't they score a few?

When the tables are reversed - we never hesitate,

Maybe sharks are biting back - before we seal their fate!

We bite at nature and protest when it bites back! Great reminder for us all to respect the world we live in--

Great poem...I never understood some people's hatred towards sharks. Sharks are animals, just like we are. When a person is attacked by a shark, the first thing that comes to mind is us humans in a "Vegas Buffet." I think it's sad for the victims and their families, but many people ask for it as well. All said, I love fishing and have an adventurous nature, so only God knows the predicaments I'll get myself into?

"Give me shark or give me death" Wait a minute---a shark WOULD give me death. Nevermind.

Excellent poem that speaks much truth!

I never have had shark soup. In fact I have not seen a live shark.

I appreciate the concern you express in your poem.

Let's eat! I mean...that's right! Humans venturing into the sharks environment well aware of the risks...have no room to complain when shit happens. They are just another animal, doing what animals do...eating to survive. Oh yeah...just like us! Now, if they walked into town to eat a human...THAT...I would have a problem with. So culling them is fine...when they come knocking.

great poem and thanks for reminding us what exactly we do to our sharks and that goes for the whales. they are all beautiful creatures in the deep. I will not swim in the ocean it scares me to death. I don't want to be shark food.. LOl

You are so damn good at writing

      the written word

and making it so simple for it

      to be heard

      the fish you are touting

      for humans to spare

      go ahead into their waters

      if you dare

      if you end up eaten

      don't cry to me

      I be at home

      eating my tuna and brie.

      Love you and your poetry.

Very touching. I often seriously consider vegetarianism because of similar thoughts that return to mind frequently. It is a dilemma to me that we must kill to eat to live. Pretty gross, killing something as complex and aware as a shark or steer, then rip off its flesh, cook it up in a pan, chew up with my teeth and swallow it down. Well, you touched a nerve. I am in sympathy with your theme.

Up, Awesome and Beautiful as always. You never disappoint Ms. L. What will humans do when there is nothing else for them to kill, maim, or torture? I've said it a thousand times, "Animals walk on two legs, not four." Please tell me the man in the shark's jaws isn't real.

Hehe good fun, the only thing to remember is that actually it is our dumb faults for making ourselves look like seals. We wear those stupid outfits, have massive boards and splash about on the water. What else would a shark think?! Actually sharks don't like human flesh, it is a myth perpetuated by Jaws. They prefer other fish and seals by a mile.

a really well written poem on an important subject... Obviously both we and the Sharks have to eat... and we do plenty of harm so that we can eat... but we certainly don't have to kill Sharks just for their Fins, or Gorillas for their hands or Elephants for their Tusks or Rhinos for their horns... killing an animal because you hope to improve your sexual prowess (take a viagra) or so you can have a pretty carving on your mantle is completely different than a shark eating something swimming in the water... where they kill to live. Stay out of the water where sharks might be... that seems like a sensible solution. Great Hub. Sharing etc.

It never fails to amaze me how God put all creatures on Earth for a reason, and man believes he has the right to choose which ones stay. Man is the most destructive killer on the planet, without a doubt. The sharks are lucky to still have most of the oceans to inhabit. Many of the land animals are becoming endangered because man would rather have a shopping center than a wildlife preserve. So sad, but true. Let's have one for the sharks! Any takers? Great job, Leslie!

i would NEVER EVER surf, scuba - even swim - in waters known to be infested with sharks - i probably wouldn't even go in a small boat!

it amazes me how folks do these things year in year out - and - still have all their extremities..lol..

on the other hand - i wouldn't kill one for all the money in the world...never mind for a bowl of stoopid soup!
