Shine the Spotlight Elsewhere: A Poem

Updated on September 16, 2012

Be Careful What You Wish For...

Shine the spotlight elsewhere,

Be undesirous of it's glare.

Think twice of that you covet,

It can cripple and ensnare!

Choose your idols cautiously,

All that glitters is not gold.

Priceless defined should be how we loved,

Not what we owned or controlled!

Choose Your Idols Cautiously
Choose Your Idols Cautiously | Source

Turn the bright lights elsewhere,

Best crave a private course.

Where peace and pride are life's rewards,

And death holds less remorse.

Wolves parading in sheep's clothing,

Preying on weaknesses we flaunt,

When one swallows without chewing,

It returns one day to haunt!

Shine the limelight elsewhere,

Fifteen minutes can cause much harm,

A world of greed engulfs us now,

Doing my damnedest to sound the alarm!

Well penned your alarms is sounding in my soul. Trust is flaunted to easily and it comes back to bite us in the ass. The world is in turmoil, the politicians singing lies as usual to ensure they get the vote. Oh how sad a world when all around us greed and avarice is the order of the day. Well stated, the message loud and clear. Thank you for sharing your wise words.

Simply put and so powerful. Sometimes the simple words are the ones with the most kick in the ass! The world today needs a collective kick in the ass. I for one, will put on my pointiest boots, stand by you forming a line and we can kick as no Rockette ever did!

      Great message!

It's impossible for those with their eyes open and their brain 'on' to not see the spiraling of greed and narcissism over the last 10-15 years...i'm not sure whether i attribute it to not being able to spank a naughty child - like we were spanked - and LEARNED - or whether i attribute it to 9/11 and the fear of terrorism - OR - the economy tanking and people losing hope...any which way i look at it - it scares shit out of me..and i do not exaggerate..SO nice to see you, sir! i like You too!

This is a fantastic poem with a message! The pursuit of fame and recognition has reached epic proportions yet few realize or even give thought to the costs and consequences. I love this stanza in particular, words of wisdom indeed:

      Turn the bright lights elsewhere,

      Best crave a private course.

Where peace and pride are life's rewards,

      And death holds less remorse.

Isn't it amazing how two people can supposedly fall in love with each other and then slowly one tries to change the other person or control them. The things they found so cute and attractive, mysteriously become the traits/habits one wants to change. That has always baffled me.

"Not what we owned or controlled" reminds me of an analogy I often like to use. Have you ever seen pictures of a homeless person sitting on a sidewalk with their dog laying on their lap? That animal loves the person unconditionally. Wealth and possessions of inanimate objects mean nothing compared to the love a dog has toward their owner. Too bad more humans couldn't love one another the same way.

So true! Power and greed can change anyone, regardless of what they envision. It happens a little at at time until it blossoms. Then, the games and false facades begin. Funny how they're much more evident with age. Great Job!

I agree with that Leslie, I don't want to be a superstar or esteemed as a celebrity. I don't even really want to post my singing videos much anymore, as I'm much less of a showoff than I used to be.

I acutally like to be hidden alot of the time. I'd often rather let someone esle have the limelight. But I will not back down if I have something useful to say. Good hub.

As for singing, though, if I had a good enough talent...I would def not hide it, the question is do I? Lol ......

As for these American Idols.....well I'm not quite the biggest fan of that show. Give me the 70's with the real talents anyday, Les lie!

Leslie, this is brilliant. I am so disgusted by all of the focus on people that are famous just for the sake of fame - Who on Earth gave a show to Honey Boo Boo?!?! And why do we need to know every tiny detail of everyone's life and every event. I really no not need to know how Jennifer Aniston paints her toenails... Ugh!

Being well known for something meaningful (a book perhaps) can be a noble thing, especially if it makes the worild a better place. No harm in striving for that... Cashing in on 15 minutes of fame with celebrity fragrance is shameful. Unless of course it os to promote that book ;)

      Thanks for this one. xx

I would sooo hate being famous Leslie. Life in the lime light is against everything I hold sacred. I wonder how some of those kids handle it that go on 'American Idol' or other reality shows. It makes me think of lottery winners. They think life will be easy once they have a lot of money but many have learned it creates pain, chaos and sometimes murder. No thanks-Thanks for reminding us all what is really important in this life.

Leslie you are truly amazing. This entire poem rings with truth along with its warning. How easily we are sucked into the whole realm of success and the spotlight.

You my friend will ever be humble though thou dost protest!

So great to see this wonderful poem here on HP, please stick around.

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting!!!

Miss you too. Trying to keep up but the loss of my father-in-law was a shock and now we have so much to do to settle things.

I know your book is going to be a HUGE success.
