This is a very interesting question, having a publisher has its benefits. The downside to publishers is they only care about the money they can make out of you.
Publishing it yourself is becoming much more popular these days, one reason is that it offers freedom. However, promoting it can be a nightmare that many writers struggle with. You may be able to find promoters who are willing to help, but you'd have to pay them a lot. Another disadvantage to self publishing is that, if someone were to steal your work it may be hard to prove. Especially if they get it published.
But if you're patient and you're willing to promote yourself, then self publishing is definitely the way to go. You can put out what you want, whenever you want. Consider starting off with some e-books first, nothing major but will make for a good read. You'll build a following up this way, then you can release bigger books, including paperback. Check out a site called www.lulu.com and they're others too, you can make the paperback copies and buy as many copies as you want to sell. This way you can have a website and only buy your book when someone orders it through your website.
