What people care about right now is unimportant. Stories like Romeo and Juliet or Wuthering Heights are timeless. Choose something you feel passionately about, be it romance, adventure, horror, or humor. I tend to prefer romance, but mix in some other genres as well, to make it a little less cheesy (My story Desert Lily (Parts 1 and 2) is posted on this site, I invite you to check it out.) Giving a story a personality is important, so once you think of the events in your story, just write how you personally would react to them (or of course you can create a new personality, but that tends to be hard to keep consistent). This will make any topic interesting to read about.
