Who are the greatest comic characters of all time?

I am doing a survey and would like to ask the hubpages comunity.  The criteria is as follows:  Characters must have appeared in either a comic strip, comic book, or a graphic novel.  Characters such as Calvin and Hobbs that are inseperable can be listed together, in the cases of superheroes where multiple people have portrayed the character I need you to tell me which one you mean.  I am looking for your top 50.

The "greatest" character in a comic book is Superman. He set the bar for what a hero should be.

    My top 50?
    Maybe 10.
Batman - with no actor attached.
Agent Graves, Wylie Times, and Cole Burns from 100 Bullets.
Carl Grimes, the son from The Walking Dead.
    Fone Bone.
    Snoopy, of course.
    Bigby Wolf from Fables.
Pig and the militant guard duck from Pearls Before Swine.
Death from Neil Gaimon's Sandman series and Death; The High Cost of Living.
    That's 11.
I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that jumped out at me.

The Fantastic Four were promoted as the the greatest comic book in the world for a long time -and I think they are right up there.
My personal favs are spidey, thor, ironman and batman.
One of the most powerful characters would be Silver Surfer without a doubt.
And one of the longest running from my neck of the woods is The Phantom.

I'd give it to any one of the above as being the greatest.
